Hello fellow space travellers. SWIM was wondering what is the best way to wash any residual traces of xylene from an evaporated A/B pull.Apparently the chemistry of Xylene results in traces being trapped under a thin Xylene film?

Would a salting with vinegar, re -basify with sodium carbonate, and then IPA pull help dispel the Xylene? Would there be much yield loss from this approach?

If you have fumaric acid, you could do FASA/FASI and reconvert to freebase with water precipitation (check BLAB tek for details), that`d be the best.

Alternatively, i´d first just scrape and spread the crystals and let it air dry as much as possible, then as you suggested, redissolve in vinegar, filter the vinegar through funnel/cotton plug, evaporate it till its almost dry, make paste with sodium carb and let dry completely, pull with IPA and evap. That should be good Smile

What about if SWIM simply added IPA, and let the DMT dissolve. Wouldn't the Xylene technically become released and then evaporate along with the IPA?

Doing the process of adding the vinegar, basifying with Sodium Carb, and then pulling with IPA, none of those steps really makes any sense in seperating the xylene and getting rid of it. I get that the Xylene seperates from the DMT in the solution and then can evaporate away, but wouldn't just adding IPA do the same thing?

Yes, dissolving in IPA and letting it evaporate will definitely give it more time to evaporate you`re right.

I´m just being exageratingly careful and doing the most steps to make sure to remove as much as possible but its probably not necessary.

When you redissolve in vinegar and filter it, any bit of xylene will be floating on top of the vinegar. When you filter that, some of the xylene gets trapped in the filter, so it helps removing it more. When you reduce the vinegar you can use a bit of heat, which makes any left over xylene even more probably evaporate away. Then when you pull the basified vinegar with your IPA and you evaporate that, again, more time for the xylene to evaporate.

So you don´t have to do all of that, you can probably just do the IPA thing and smell to see if there´s any xylene left, but if you want to be anal about the whole thing like I sometiems am, you can go that whole way Very happy

Whatever you choose, im sure will be good. Be well!
