I read there are close to 130 alkaloids int rosea and one on edot saying it is almost like ibogaine,or datura anybody hear of it? What is even more interesting is that Catharanthus Lanceus is said to contain 6% yohimbine in the leaves, but the plant,or seeds hard to find for some reason. Would there be anyway to extract only the yohimbine from the leaves?

Thank you alot for the tip, I had never heard of the Catharanthus before this. C. lanceus sounds very interesting with that claimed extreme Yohimbine content, and C. roseus looks like it is worth a try too. The alkaloids in it have some pretty extreme differences in both structure and mode of action, but I guess it will be cool to have a whole medicine cabinet inside one plant. Pleased I would be very interested in some seeds, anyone know of a supplier?

There is alot of interesting plants from Madagascar! I am growing another cool plant from this island right now - Delosperma bosseranum. The effects is like Kanna, only stronger and more sedating.

roseus seeds you can find anywhere(ebay and almost any place), but lanceus no where that I've seen. The report I read from zombiesoul said it lasts a long time and weird visions that last a while personally I'm just interested in the yohimbine from lanceus.

Yeah, I agree Lanceus is the interesting one. Roseus contains too many weird subtances for my taste, even the 6 alkaloids listed on Wikipedia have a huge difference in both chemistry and effects. If it is correct that it have 130 alkaloids, it is just like eating one pill from every box in your medicine cabinet. Razz

I will post here if I find a supplier of Lanceus now or later, and I hope you will do the same!

Catharanthus plants are very very dangerous if ingested!

Seriously they contain alkaloids that are very cytotoxic (which makes them useful for cancer vinblastine, vincristine, vindesine and vinorelbine are some examples) but also means they are serious poisons.

You can take doses of the plant that are safe and use medicinally but you might lose your hair or die.

What substances is responsible for this toxic effect? Maybe it is possible to extract the Yohimbine from Lanceus, without the toxins?

Vinblastine is an anti-cancer drug. Would you willing take chemotherapy medication?

It also has drugs useful for diabetes.

Anyway you can eat small amounts of C. roseus and probably be ok you could even make crude ethanol extracts and be ok. But you need to do really low doses and this stuff is NOT recommended for self medication.

Pure vinblastine is really dangerous (LD 50 in rats 1.3 mg/kg) as are many of the other alkaloids in this plant so unless one can be 100% sure you are not concentrating them during an extraction one could seriously endanger oneself. Cancer patients typically get 5mg X square meter of body surface per month. They are only found in low amounts though about 3g per ton of plant material! That makes this plant and these anti cancer drugs really really valuable and there is currently great interest in getting plants to produce more or make more synthetically or combination of both. Wonderful plant anyway I am telling you this information for your own safety and potential interest in some of the other uses of this really useful plant.
