First I’d like to say I like the positive attitude and vibe of this board. I’ve popped in and out of it as a lurker for some time now.
Now for a little info about myself,… I guess you would say I’m beyond middle age if we use the current average life expectancy, but I’m still too far away from retirement age.
I’ve pretty much been a seeker and experimenter from a very young age. Living in rural areas in my youth with older brothers who also experimented I was doing weed and shroooms before my teen years. Later experiencing many LSD trips.
As life progressed I lived kinda on the edge/in the drug culture. When my family grew I decide to take some steps back. But kept smoking regularly and tripping. Eventually I quit weed because of my career. Psychedelics and weed were my favorites before I stopped all chemical use for a number of years.
A number of years ago my oldest son mentioned DMT to me. He know I use to like tripping, in his teens we always had shrooms drying in the garage, and I have always promoted the idea that every one should trip in their youth at least a couple times.
I must say here I practice mediation pretty regular, and have done week long sessions. Not to mention the multi day hikes for rejuvenation, and retrospection.
I did some reading, he did some studying, we talked he did more research as did I.
He finally had the chance and tried it. It was a life-changing event for him. So over the next few years we would on occasion talk about it as I toyed with the idea of trying it. Finally last year as we planned to visit for the holidays, I mentioned to him I wanted to try it, as I had decide to get back to some journeying.
All I can say is wow. My first time to try it I had a hell of a break through. I’ve tried to do it a few times since then with one break through and 2 misfires. I’ve really look forward to sharing and learning more here and on my future journeys into hyperspace…
Peace
hiker

Welcome! I am new too, but I just wanted to say that I think it is great that you have such an open relationship with your son. I've been proposing the idea of mushrooms to my dad for a few months now and he is quite resistant to it. But oh well, one can only try to share the wonderful experiences we have with others.

Hi hiker, That is quite an original sounding story. I'm glad you have such an open relationship as well. I like seeing all the researching going on. Please do write an experience report of that first instance with the molecule and I'll happily read it. ![Smile](/forum/images/emoticons/smile.png) I too agree, along with traveling to a country of completely different culture, a young person should trip at least once. Even before I knew of hyperspace or that there even were theories of it, I used to say to other people once they'd admit to psychedelic use "so, you've been 'there' too, huh?" EVERY time they knew what I meant. Thank you for your introduction and welcome to the Nexus ![Pleased](/forum/images/emoticons/happy.png) * Everything I write is made up tripe: whispers of wind coming off the blades in my face for I am a fictional man with a floor fan for a brain pan.
Say something to my face, I have no choice, but to replace my reply, with your Darth Vader voice!

Hey hiker! Welcome. I'm glad to hear about the family connections. I have similar relationships with my folks. My dad is my favorite person(aside from my wife, if she happens to be reading.) He's almost 70, and has walked his fair share of this earth. I've been having these instinctive impulses to tell him about it. We'll see Sometimes it's good for a change. Other times it isn't.

Well I had him(he came into my life) at a very young age and he got be around and see some interesting times. I also believe in being honest as a parent. Especially since addiction runs in our family. I’ve been very fortunate that even though I made sure I was a parent and not necessarily their friend in my/their youth we all have developed great relationships as they matured.
Floorfan like I said I have been a seeker all my life. Knowledge? Understanding? Perhaps one day wisdom… I will take some time and write up a report in the near future.
And yes you are correct, there is unspoken understand between those that have traveled…
peace

Hello there! Quote:I was doing weed and shroooms before my teen years. Interesting. What age were you at your first trip with mushrooms? How would you say it affected your life? I'm very curious about tribes which make their children trip with psychedelics at a young age. I think Amerindians do that with mescaline, am I right? And I'm sure some people of the psychedelic culture do that to. I'm not judging if it is good or bad, I think psychedelics with young people is a very sensitive subject, and I wouldn't recommend anyone to try it before being a full grown adult, but this way of doing make me very curious. So the fact that you tripped, even by yourself, at a young age raise questions to me.

I don't really have an opinion on when one "should" try any particular experience. I know that I got a lot more out of mushrooms when I was was in my late 20s than when I was 18. That likely comes from a perspective change. Good medicine vs drugs. Same stuff; different perspective; phenomenal, life changing results. It's like building a mountain vs. Digging a hole. To do one, you are also doing the other. When you are finished, where do you WANT to stand? Sometimes it's good for a change. Other times it isn't.

What a fantastic way of looking at it. While I haven't done psychedelics yet so I can't comment from experience, I completely understand this viewpoint.

Sludge I was right at 12/13 the first time I did shrooms. Was given some tea the trip was fairly mild. But I feel that early experience combined with my curious nature lead me to pursue more mind developmental thing such as, remote projection, lucid dreaming, meditation etc as a youth. It had me question the acceptance the “perceived reality.” A benefit I believe.
ACY Love this statement, “Good medicine vs drugs. Same stuff; different perspective; phenomenal, life changing results” And agree age isn’t the quantifying factor, perspective and maturity yes…

Thank you for your answer. I think that set&setting and knowledge about substances are the most important things, and most of the teenagers tend to not go further enough before tripping. Often just eating what a friend bring them telling "it will be fun". A source of many bad experiences with mushrooms or with Cannabis in Amsterdam I think.
But I can totally imagine that a society based on psychedelic medicine can help their young to become better people with the use of psychedelics.
And I'm happy to read that your own experience with your brothers was good (and it's a different subject that the one with cultural rituals, so I'm not gonna disturb your arrival topic more).
