Awesome! Very good to know guys thanks
What I'm thinking, based on these replies, is to get the first batch of grappa(moonshine) the old man makes. He said it is way too strong to drink and can easily kill you. That's usually about the first 5 liters.

Pour one cup of the moonshine you are intending to use and let it evaporate then use a razor blade and see if you can scrape up anything on the flat glass surface. If nothing is left behind you are good to go, if it leaves any residue then those are impurities that WILL be passed along to your final product and they will accumulate with the more moonshine you use. Best to use moonshine with the highest proof (% ethanol) and lowest water content possible and to use as clear as possible moonshine so as to not leave behind any impurities in the final product.
I will get a bottle off the old man and give it a test! Great idea!
Thanks again guys! Open source is good source!
