Funny thing is this happened to me only a few months before my first dmt experience. Still, it was not until a good 12 years later--and many dmt experiences later, before I saw the similarity to a dmt breakthrough.
Dmt--never aborted a dmt trip. Back when sleep paralysis was common for me I would usually get bugged out and abort the experience. Lack of phantasmagoria--the dmt is usually all crazy and stuff--these OBE's were always a bit plain, by comparison. I never saw much similarity between OBE and DMT until I heard the tone on DMT and realized that it was the same/similar to the tone that I always get with OBE...
Anyway--it seems that you basically realised a similarity between the two experiences right away. How is that? You mention 'dmt feeling'--so it was like dmt head-space to you, or what?
I made that realization because a month earlier I accidentally took 3x the amount of a normal DMT dose by vaporizing it. This took me so far away that I was scared to death and afraid that I would have to remain there for the eternity. I got this overwhelming Deja Vu feeling and fear based thought "That's it, now I'm finally gone too far, totally out of my comfort zone and anything can happen to me now, even death."
At the moment of being pulled away by the alien I immediately started to feel vast fear because I recognized the body feel that occurred during the breakthrough to this utterly weird place on my last DMT trip/overdose. I also got the typical DMT buzz in my head and the tone made it all come together. Everything in that room I was transferred to looked similarly unearthly to DMT trip. I knew that DMT alone can be horrific but add grey aliens to the formula and it has a potential to bring the terror to a whole new level

So, simply put, I just recognized the good old DMT kicking in

can't explain that. Body feel + visuals + fear of recognition = must be DMT. Although visuals were the least similar to DMT because they also included a bit of haziness of typical OOBEs.
Ever since that experience I have gained access to astral travel on demand almost every day. Although I'm still a bit afraid of being pulled to scary places I immediately concentrate on love and happy things when getting to the astral world and so far I haven't been pulled away again. I am still having trouble with moving around in the astral world like a baby who just learns to walk or something. The DMT similarities are always there, however, they were by far the strongest during the alien encounter.
My usual astral experiences include the fact that the walls - such they be - are crawling with geometric hallucination (not sure if in astral world or immediately after waking up from the astral experience).
Some other similarities with DMT trips are the fact that certain objects in the astral dimension are completely different than their physical world counterparts. For example I have books on a shelf in my room but in astral world there are magazines instead

and the magazines keep changing their covers randomly after every what-feels-like-a-second.
I'm amazed how real all the touching senses are in the astral world. Sometimes invisible female hands grasp my hand or feet and either start pulling these or just touch me in a pleasant way and this is 100% the same level of reality as in physical world you would hold someone's hand.
This may or may not interest you as it's somewhat offtopic:I don't practise closed eyes meditation very often because it's somewhat boring. However, I have discovered that when you stare at the same spot for long time thinking of nothing and not blinking your eyes then the walls start to wobble similarly to LSD and DMT experiences. I've been doing this a lot and I have noticed improvements, and this may be important: I have noticed that my ability to see the wobble in the space and matter has improved over time in a way that I can get to the point of wobble quicker. Is it my pineal gland's ability to produce DMT on demand? I don't know, but it sure is interesting.
