Well unfortunately they are probably all gone for the year. We had some pretty heavy frosts, and that is usually the trigger to return them to dormancy. There may be some on the coast, so that was actually a good place to be looking. It's usually a bit warmer there, but I don't know how the cold weather affected the area.

My advice is to cover as much ground as possible, and don't get too caught up in kicking grass around or picking through brush. They grow abundantly when in season, so you shouldn't miss them if they are in the area. Always look in wood chips, it is where I have always found them. They can grow in tall thick grass, but they absolutely love wood chips. If you tune your brain well, you can spot them pretty easily after a bit, even though they blend in quite well some times. Feast your eyes on mycoporn, and take note of the environment and general composition of the growing area.

Good luck! And don't feel discouraged if you don't find any this year, like I said they are probably turned in until next fall.

I live on the northernmost part of the Cali coast.....I heard they stay around this area, or at least Humbodlt, til' the end of December, sometimes into January?

I've only had one frost here, that I know of and it was pretty light....maybe two weeks ago.

I honestly didn't know where to look along the coastline...Little grassy areas...then down by the beach, where the driftwood met the grass. No luck. Wet feet though, lol.

Then there's these spreads of weird, little green & red plants, almost like Aloe in the way they feel to the touch....but I doubt it's there.

Going to look in some parks tomorrow.

Hopefully I can find some before the season is out.

Oh, I was thinking you were in the Washington/Oregon area. I can't say how prevalent they are there in Cali, never hunted there. They should still be out and around there, assuming you've had enough rain and humidity.

Look in human altered places. They are rarely found in naturally occurring environments. I know azurascens can live right on the beach in the dune grass, but I am not sure cyans will. Drift wood is quite salty.

Mushroom dreams are a good sign.

Well, I did find some, but not Cyanescens.

I'm pretty sure I just found Psilocybe cubensis...on Redwood logs....like really.

I have pictures of the mushrooms, but no in habitat photos, as I was without a phone or any other device....I know, I know...hate me. I can take it.

These were growing RIGHT out of the logs, as in right out of the clean-cut ends, from within cracks & from all around the 'sides'.

best advice from an admittedly non-resident and formerly very suspicious ground-gazing longhaired stranger driving with faraway plates, year after year for weeks at a time up and down not really doing anything else, would be to move to the Seattle area.

large early cyan patches were only found in disturbed but still rather wild and woody areas, on and at the bottom of slopes. and in woody grass not far away.

the Valley of the Gods, which shows up as a road on Federal Way google maps and even has street view of the entrance, was observed on many consecutive years up to around 10 years ago and was and probably still is self perpetuating and undisturbed. its a patch 30'x at least 60', an unused path/ditch 5' wide with steep slopes along it covered by decaying leaves and logs and twigs and small trees and a few medium trees. because of the slope, it seems trees have a hard time staying upright there, so the whole place is decaying deciduous trees and replacements and it's been that way for quite a while. the other places where they were found in the Seattle area were in similar areas.

no caps were ever taken. they were left mycelium undisturbed (except for some "experimental work" ) gills down in um...large numbers...and it wasn't a problem.

perhaps some of this difficulty in finding them is related to other people not finding them...bit of a dilemma...went to Borders to see the new Stamets book in 96 where he mentioned azures and Astoria and i went straight there...listened to the local radio morning shows talking about all the people who were arrested for picking mushrooms yesterday...found one only by accident...next to the outhouse...they are strong...
