SWIM made a batch of DMT had that strong mothball/old people smell... Now what SWIM doesn't understand is it has an extremely faint smell! SWIM's first batch smell was strong as hell.

Did it lose potency or something???

From my experience extracting, my purest extracts have smelled the least. I think that it's the non-dmt material that smells (NMT, other alkaloids, oils, etc), since after removing all of the NMT from my extracts the DMT lost the mimosa-style flowery/semen smell, and has only a very faint bitter chemical smell.

I wouldn't worry about it as long as you get active material.

Okay thank you SWIM was just a little worried. SWIM does not like change.

I agree with arcologist, but I would say that I actually think a lot of the smell is related to residue solvent, since when redissolving in ethanol or acetone and reevaporating fully, smell diminishes. Also when precipitating DMT freebase from water like the BLAB tek conversion, the smell is a bit more neutral, flowery-crayon, instead of too sharp and plasticky like from naphtha crystals.

Exactly - that's my experience as well. Most of the distinct plasticky new shoes/new tennis balls smell goes away when spice is dissolved in a solvent like alcohols or ketones and evaporated.

It may be that residual naphtha in the crystals contribute to the placticky smell, which I consider it unlikely. I personally think that other more volatile substances (like indole or skatole?) that contribute to the plasticky smell just evaporate off a dmt preparation given time (as per OP) or if dmt is dissolved in alcohols/ketones. The end-product then smells far less plasticky and more as "flowery-cayon" as endlessness put it.

But inf, did you ever see any evidence for skatole or indole being present in dmt extracts, ever? The only time I ever saw what might be skatole was some minor peak in crude mimosa methanol soak, but had no standard to confirm. In the extracts, I`ve never seen it.

This is interesting!

But how much smell is left in the pipe after vaping?

Does pipe have less of a strong oder after use?

Also is the positive DMT effect still as strong as it was before redesolving in acetone?

The odor after heating is the same as mimosa DMT.

My spice reminds me of mothballs (naphthalene) in taste & smell; I used naptha. I think it would be nice if that taste/smell could be seriously diminished; I'm glad I ran across this.

Has anything been found in DMT extracts that shows up as naptha-related residue?

I guess I'm the odd man out but I always dissolve the results of my re-x in ethanol or ipa and once the ethanol is dry I still get a distinctly indole smell.

alert, there is definitely an indole smell but it is qualitatively different IME.

Cosmic Spore, I'm not sure, I'd have to check back on it to see if anything showed up in mass spectra, I think I do remember some small unidientified peaks in some samples which could be related to solvents.

Very good point...which means that I have to think again as to what might be happening with the smell.

If compounds like skatole or indole are not present in any preparation of extracted dmt, then another explanation may be crystal type; naphtha evaporations give distinct, often "fluffy" dmt crystals that may be more volatile.

On the other hand, ketone or alcohol evaporations give particularly tight, marginally or not at all crystalline dmt owning to the very high solubility of dmt in ketone and/or alcoholic solvents. This might per se make the dmt far less volatile, thus less smelly.
