My friend smoked DMT for the first time using the sandwich method w/ weed through a bong. It was a small dose, probably about 5mg. It felt like a harsh hit, too hot and too dense, and he felt like his throat and chest were getting burnt. He found himself being unable to breathe properly, then started to get a panic attack. During the experience he had mostly uneasy and chaotic thoughts. Probably took the hit too quickly, as it made his oral cavities, throat and lungs so sore and numb that it caused panic during the experience.

He then developed hives two days later, similar to that of an allergic reaction and ended up in the hospital. The doctors thought he had some mild symptoms of Stevens-Johnson syndrome or Lupus... but concluded he doesn't have anything life-threatening. Still worried though. The back of his tongue has swollen up and developed a chameleon skin-like texture, with some white bulbs that are bleeding. He's recovering now, and using Betamethasone Valerate 0.1% topically for the hives.

The DMT clearly didn't work at all, although he had some color enhancement for a minute.
Question is... Has this ever happened to anyone else?? Any idea what factors might've caused this? We're still trying to figure out if it was the vapor, mold in the weed, if the DMT had something else in it, hydrocarbon poisoning, or even the smoking method. He's used the bong for smoking weed other before and never had any problems with it though.

Was this DMT that you or him extracted?

The smoking method itself wouldn't have done this. The burning sensation "sounds" like burnt DMT. But all the symptoms together sounds to me like either that WAS NOT DMT, or it was contaminated with lye or something.

Also that small amount of DMT, however a great choice to start low, should not have been that bad even if he had burnt it. Sounds to me like something is wrong with the substance you have that you think is DMT.

Also, theres no such thing as "taking the hit too quickly".

Sounds like something went terribly wrong during extraction. Pure DMT wouldn't do this. Was coleman's camp fuel used or something?

Smoking method being the culprit is out of the question especially if it was through a bong

did you guys extract it? are you even sure its dmt? i would bet its something else...and/or very badly contaminated.

<Ringworm>hehehe, it's all fun and games till someone loses an "I"

We didn't extract it ourselves but it was from the same batch his friend smoked before, and he turned out okay. We didn't use any fuel or anything.

Somebody said it was normal for people to get panic attacks and a slight color change at that small of a dose... Still doesn't explain the hives though. Very sad about this and frightened Sad

Could the hives have been either a co-incidence, or brought about by the stress of the failed trip, rather than some sort of bodily reaction to the DMT itself?

What did this DMT look like? Crystals? Goo?

MY guess would be: He burned the DMT and experienced pain as a result. Two days later, he got sick for unrelated reasons and attributed it to smoking DMT. But that's, of course, only a guess.

Well, his chest turned immediately red after he felt the burn, and the hives just gradually spread for the next two days. We did consider other possible allergies as another cause, but everything did start from that hit.

The DMT was a yellow powder.

He's a healthy guy and never smoked before, but this definitely is gonna take him out for a week. Recovering now though!

Big guess on a contaminated batch or lye.

With little info, that would b my guess also.

Correlation is not causation 'n all dat.

Good luck.

This was my guess as well.

Right, i got a nasty throat infection shortly after smoking slightly too much harmala alkaloids. You have to take these things with a grain of salt, and never directly relate two things as being causal. Just take it as motivation to be more intentional with your smoking method, set, and setting next time.

Also, hold a vegetable glycerin echinacea extract in your mouth for awhile prior to launch, it feels amazing!

The hives I think was panic/stress-induced rather than a reaction to the DMT itself... Definitely will do it more prepared next time. Thanks for the tips everyone.

Yea, that and try to extract your own DMT, you will know what's exactly in there.

^^^^^^^

Yes, extracting yourself is the only way to ensure you know what it actually is (other than TLC or some other method of testing) I highly recommend it especially after and experience like this.
