Nice little seedling! You mention that you've grown other mimosas in the past. Would you mind elaborating a bit? I ask because I've got a single small mimosa that I'm raising indoors (don't have much space), and I haven't really been able to find much information on how much I'll be able to sustainably harvest after it eventually grows to a large houseplant size. Any experience you've got to share would be much appreciated.

As far as I know you won't yield any substantial amount of what you're looking for until it is a mature tree, not a house plant. What I would do is make a cutting from your house plant and propagate another somewhere nearby outdoors where it will be left alone. Trend to that with much care and you will reap the fruits which you seek. I don't know for sure though as I've never tried harvesting what you're looking for from a mere sapling. Kind of like accepting a kidney donation from a toddler...it has not had time to fully develope to suit your needs.

P.s. I have grown over a dozen MH from seed, cutting. I usually give them to an appreciative person one I'm confident they can grow fairly easily without much effort by anyone else. I have 2 full grown in my own yard, a sapling in my yard, and a "house plant" as well. I have much experience growing these wonderful trees, but I am no expert in how much deems it would contain.

Cold they can tolerate as long as they are healthy prior to the cold weather. What keeps them from attaining maturity is usually a lack of sunlight, so they don't grow in mountainous areas very well.

I was under the impression they won't grow in my area. PNW

Pot within a pot indoors, harvesting what I can. But if you don't think it'll be enough to be worthwhile, I'll start another plant or two.

Are you sure about this? As I understand it Mimosa tenuiflora will not tolerate cold weather at all.

FAIL!

It wont grow outside even in zone 8 year round..trust me I have tried. I have a 2 year old tree indoors the size of me and I cant get mimosas to grow year round outside here and I am in zone 8b. Anything less than that forget it for sure.

About what exactly? Mimosa hostilis doesn't like cold, hence for outdoor growth you want to be in at least Zone 9.



What zone do you live in? Would you mind posting pictures of your full grown trees? Are you 100% sure what you are growing is actually mimosa hostilis?

Love the little plant.

I live in Holland and have 15 youngsters of a few inches. They started their life this summer in front of the window but now it gets colder, i put them all in my growing tent. They get 12 hours of light there and love it. I haven´t raised one to adulthood yet, but things are going good.

Ive heared the mimosa thrives in brazil when it grows near waterfalls. It seems to love light, warmth and humidity.

I live in SE NM, but right now I'm in northern VA taking care of legal issues. I'd be glad to post when I get back...and I'm not 100% it's mimosa hostilis...but the pics I've compared match.

Maybe you need to wait until the cotyledons spread open completely and you get a peek to the first pair of true leaves to be definitely sure, but considering the color and shape of the seed, and the last picture you posted, I think that looks more like Albizia Julibrissin. There's been a few reports of Albizia seeds being mistakenly ID'ed and sold as Mimosa Tenuiflora/Hostilis.

I've never seen MT keeping the cotyledons closed like that, and with the true leaves so developed between the cotyledons. Plus MT seeds are smaller, rounder and darker.

You can share another picture once the true leaves are visible and then we can be 100% sure. Sorry to rain on your parade, but it would be a shame to put a lot of care and attention if you don't have what you think you have.

It's no worries if not, I didn't but seeds. After googling what you said I believe you are right...bummer, but nothing to fret over, I have a good amount of the root bark I bought last year.
