Hey all, here's what happened. First few times I've extracted spice (STB using whatcha's TEK) the crystals came out white, very off white (first picture). But this most recent time I got completely different results following the same procedure.

I did a freeze precip for 72 hours and the yielding a tan-ish color crystals, I scraped out the pint mason jar and spread the crystals on a glass dish to evap and left in front of a fan. This is how they came out (second picture). Is the brown color correct? It's way different looking than my first few attempts at an extraction.

I also had an additional 1/2 pint jar containing spice-solvent from an older pull I decided to try to freeze precip that as well and was left with some large crystals around the corner of the jar. I put that next to the dish on it's side in front of the fan to speed up the evap process. I checked back later on and almost all of the crystals were gone (except for one on the top) and the rest was a crimson colored goo (third picture). What is this, is it jungle or just extra oils?

Not too sure.. pics did not work.

I'd try the sample in the second pic to see if you like the experience. I had some of that a while back and didn't enjoy it. I had difficulty breathing during the ride...gasping of breath, which kind of freaked me out. More body buzz too.

So I did a recrystallization and obtained more pure/white spice from the original orange/tan product. I saved the darker stuff and will probably reincorporate it into my next extraction.

But that's just me. I've read where many people prefer the darker samplings to the whiter varieties.

Was it the same solvent as before? What is the solvent you are using?

If its naphtha/fuel, notice that often different kinds of these solvents will contain different compositions. Naphtha is a mixture of aliphatic hydrocarbons (hexane, heptane, octane, etc, plus isomers), and sometimes may contain some aromatics too (like xylene). Another variable is temperature, as it warms up it changes what it can dissolve, and the rate at which the solubility changes with temperature is unique to each substance. Now considering that a plant like mimosa (or any other) has a complex mixture of alkaloids (so far with mimosa there where three found AFAIK: DMT, NMT and 2-MTHBC. Plus yuremamine which is destroyed in a normal extraction), plus different innactive organic and fatty acids and oils, phenolic compounds, etc.

So after considering all this, note that ¨jungle spice¨ is a generic name that is often used for a mimosa extraction using xylene or toluene. Unless one did several (warm) washes with an aliphatic hydrocarbon, that jungle spice will contain in the most part some DMT.

If you have ¨jungle spice¨ or not is an impossible question to answer. It may be depending on your solvent and extraction characteristics, you have a broad range of substances that is more or less similar to xylene extracted stuff. Or maybe you have a few similar substances and others are missing. Or maybe its all in very different ratios. etc.. Know what I mean?

In any case, appart from the ¨good¨ (or neutral) substances one can extract, another factor to consider is if this is some bad impurity. In that case, did you use any plastic or something that could have ended up in your final product? Do your solvents evap clean? Is it possible it was some remains of the lye solution that came across in very small droplets that you didnt notice, and as it freeze precipitated it accumulated in the bottom and thats what youre seeing? Is it possible to be a mixture of all of this ?

Lastly, also check this thread, it might be of interest: https://www.dmt-nexus.me...aspx?g=posts&t=11715

Also check the sticky threads from Burnt in the advanced chem section for analysis of jungle spice

Yes the same, I used klean-strip VM&P Naphtha. The only difference is with the first picture I used new Naphtha throughout the whole procedure. With the second and third pictures only the first pull was clean Naphtha and the rest was recycled from prior extractions.

I had the MHRB/Naphtha solution sitting in a heat bath and let settle for good amount of time before decanting the naphtha layer

I made sure not to get too close to the basified water, I left a layer about 1/8" of Naphtha in the jug just to be sure I didn't extract any lye/mhrb. I used a HDPE jug but AFAIK there shouldn't be any plastic in the solution. I may try a reX on it soon to clean it up a bit nevertheless.

Sorry to double post but if I reX'd would this work as a seed crystal?

Reused naphtha seems like a possible culprit there, accumulation of plant oils, from older and from this extraction, leading to browner/more impure product

You can always clean up if you want, at least part of it, and bioassay separately (though if you ´expect´ the unclean part to be dirtier, it might already influence your subjective experience.. ).

As for the seeding, what is that exactly, some string (of what material?) with what on it ? crystals already, of dmt? I wonder about the color, maybe the ink dissolves in solvent?

hmm, same thing here. I use naphtha as well, heated my jar and shook it hard for a few seconds a series of times then releasing air pressure, keeping it 90 degrees F. I let the lye settle.. or did i? I thought it was plant fats that was a result of the shaking. was going to smoke it but now a re x to be safe. the naphtha used was clean but this particular pic was from the 4th or 5th pull. so yes it was dirty yellow

Re-x should clear it right up with some warm naptha and freeze precip.

The string is from a previous reX from a different extraction, I used a string with a knot in the end and left in a shotglass that was freeze precipitating and that's what came out to make a seed crystal. ( http://chemistry.about.c...gcrystals/a/aa012604.htm )

I picked up some n-Heptane this weekend, and did the reX last night on all of it. I'll post results later today or tomorrow Very happy

Results:

It came out great, glad I did the reX. It looks a LOT better than the brown gunk IMHO.

Also, the string worked as a seed crystal Pleased

I always scrape it with the flat side of the end of an Xacto knife, then use a little brush to sweep it into my storage container
