In q21q21's tek2, it calls for freeze precipitation by placing the solution onto a tray which is placed into a freezer for the DMT to precipitate. Afterwards, the tray is taken out and the naptha is poured out and either reused or evaped.

My question is can a jar with a closed container be used to freeze precipitate? In theory, I would take the jar out, open the lid, scratch the crystals off the surface and filter it through a coffee filter. First, would this method work? Second, would I need to worry about condensation or anything?

Hello,

I would advise you use a small baking tray to freeze precip, jars are much harder to scrape out. If you don't use a closed container then your food may end up tasting nasty.

The process I use is as follows....

1, after freeze precip Pour naphtha out of the tray through a coffee filter into another container, I use a 500 ml measuring jug.
2. Trap a coffee filter between the baking tray and its lid and place it back in the freezer upside down and on an angle for an hour to allow the remaining naphtha to run off
3. Take out the freezer and place in front of a fan for 20 mins
4. Scrape
5. Shocked

Hope that helps.

Definitely use a lid unless you want your freezer smelling like solvent.

@3rdI

So after the first precipitation, you filter the naptha into another jug and place that into the freezer? This would precipitate the remaining crystals onto the coffee filter places between the jar opening and the lid?

No, the naphtha that I pour of I save for next time, I pour it through a filter to catch any floating crystals.

After the solvent has been poured out I put the freeze precip tray back in the freezer so that the small amount of naphtha that doesn't pour off has time to slowly run into the trapped filter. I do this so that there is no chance of the crystals dissolving once it warms to room temperature while its being fanned.
