I'd just like to say, while this video makes me not want to purchase an iphone, i hate them anyway.

Apple can stick their shiny new iphones up their arses every 6 months, instead of shilling people to buy another phone every year. After year, after year.

I've had the same linux smartphone for 4 years, and it can do almost anything the iphone can and more, its open source, and a solid piece of hardware.

Anyone who buys an iphone, is more concerned with how they are perceived by others for buying said iphone, rather than the features/product itself. Pretty sad really.

"let those who have talked to the elves, find each other and band together" -TMK

In a society in which nearly everybody is dominated by somebody else's mind or by a disembodied mind, it becomes increasingly difficult to learn the truth about the activities of governments and corporations, about the quality or value of products, or about the health of one's own place and economy.
In such a society, also, our private economies will depend less upon the private ownership of real, usable property, and more upon property that is institutional and abstract, beyond individual control, such as money, insurance policies, certificates of deposit, stocks, etc. And as our private economies become more abstract, the mutual, free helps and pleasures of family and community life will be supplanted by a kind of displaced citizenship and by commerce with impersonal and self-interested suppliers...
The great enemy of freedom is the alignment of political power with wealth. This alignment destroys the commonwealth - that is, the natural wealth of localities and the local economies of household, neighborhood, and community - and so destroys democracy, of which the commonwealth is the foundation and practical means.” - Wendell Berry

Are you serious with that blanket statement? I have an Iphone. I love it, and no im not freaking out about big brother. I dont live a life of paranoia and fear.
Pretty sad really.

Any cel phone can be used to track your location, listen to conversations even if turned off and many smart phones can have the camera turned on remotely. So I wouldn't get on some safer than thou high horse about your old lenox phone. It can and does breech your privacy just as well ever day.

Sometimes this side of the nexus bums me out and makes me wonder. Im not stupid. I have known about programs like Eschelon since the 80's. I have known my transmissions are being listened to and read in some form for much longer than any of you just now freaking out about prism. I know what cel phones can do. I know about FB and google working with agency's. But sorry I don't think anyone's coming to kick in our door and black hood us to Gutmo Bay Cuba.

If I was planning some huge terrorist event yet maybe Id be worried but I'm not. I realize my privacy is invaded and my rights trampled daily and I hate it. But I don't see the point in some of the lengths some people go to to "feel safe". Trust me not buying a particular phone isn't going to keep you anonymous in this society.

A lot of the same people that are freaking out about cel phones swipe their debit card for every cup of coffee and meal. If you really want to make a difference start using cash!!! Look into that.

I'm still using a nokia, it's a slide top and definitely not a smartphone. I got it last year and as soon as my wife saw it she blurts out that it is so 2006, ha ha!

No diss on the smartphone either, I just haven't felt like the cost warrants getting one at this point. And I like the fact that if I'm out somewhere socially that I am forced to conversate the old fashioned way and not stay glued to my smartphone updating my location to facebook, instagramming and hashtagging myself into oblivion...

(And that wasn't a blanket statement about smartphone users either though I've been noticing it more and more when I am out for dinner etc lately)

I'm not a technophobe either, as a musician and music lover I love my computer and ipod, there are some really cool recording apps for iphone for capturing ideas on the fly and you can even get a converter cable and plug your guitar into it and use it as a quality headphone practice amp. One day I will join the dark side Twisted Evil

Yeah i think most people here realize that any smart phone and virtually any phone/device in general can be used to violate your privacy in all sorts of ways. I think the better argument against smart phones and apple's products in particular is the backwards ethics behind how their products get on the shelves, their insane labor practices, not open source, etc. There are much bigger reasons not to buy these things than just paranoia about privacy IMO

not to mention the way these things tend to impact peoples behavior in general (see these vids for example)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OINa46HeWg8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HbYScltf1c

There is also the possible impact of EMFs on health, but I'm not well educated on that topic so i'd rather not go there and derail this more since it was mostly just pointing out the humorous irony of this situation

All that being said i don't look down on people who have smart phones. I was gifted one myself by a family member after my old crap phone broke over a year ago. I needed a phone for my job at the time, so instead of giving it away and having to buy yet another plastic piece of electronics I kept it. I probably would have kept it whether or not i needed it for a job though. I hardly use it and mostly keep it off, but of course it obviously does come in handy and is really cool in some ways, despite all the negatives associated with them

The really curious thing is that in a lot of ways these devices are like something that dropped right out of hyperspace... when you really think about it... ^__^

This is seriously horrible. I don't want to own such a device. And Apple sucks with glueing the battery into the case, so John Doe has to buy a new device, when the old one fails. Sustainability? Not with Apple.

Quote:

Apple continues the everlasting trend of locking users out with pentalobular screws.

The battery has lost the 5's convenient pull tab, and gained more resilient adhesive—it now requires heat and prying to remove.

I wait for the new generation of smart phones, where the OS is open source, the labor cost are paid fair and I can check the random number generators. I mean Apple & Samsung make billions with hipsters worldwide, but can't raise the labor cost of one phone ( currently $8 ) to $10 or $15, so the workers can make a living.

Quote:
Apple spends at least $191 on components to build a 16 gigabyte iPhone 5s. The cost rises to $210 for a 64GB unit. The cost of assembly adds another $8 per unit, bringing the range to between $199 and $218. [..] Without a contract, the iPhone sells at prices ranging from $649 to $849, depending on storage capacity.

http://allthingsd.com/20...to-build-173-for-the-5c/

And if I can't execute "dieharder -a" in a command shell, the phone is useless these days.
