Hey everyone. So I did a nice A/B extraction which came out fine on the 1rst freeze precipitation but then I recrystallized with heptane and there was all this gooey residue over the crystals.

I dissolved the crystals a second time with naphtha and then allowed the saturated naphtha to cool in the fridge. I poured it of and a lot of goo was left at the bottom of the container.

I froze the naphtha and it formed some nice white crystals. The container used was to small, I think, and when I break apart larger chunks of crystals there is more goo inside.

I don't know what this goo was from but I think it was the bestine heptane. I have bought and used heptane before but on the east cost instead of the west and didn't have this problem. I am using vmp naphtha.

Can someone confirm that this is from one of the solvents? The goo has no color.

I am going to recrystallize again and try the same technique as before but this time freeze it in a large container.

Does someone know of another technique besides recrystallization for getting this goo out? It is soluble in naphtha at warm temperatures. Maybe a sodium carbonate wash?

Hi

What material did you extract from?

Check this thread.

If you used ACRB, then that goo might be a mix of other wanted goodies.

Test your solvents to make sure they evaporate clean, so that's not an issue.

Search around for some more threads on the issue. Some people prefer to work with the goo, or there's Teks to get the purer DMT crystal out of the goo.

Let me get this straight. So when you freeze-precipitated your first pull, and it "came out fine", does this mean that you yielded nice crystals that remained solid when you poured off the solvent and let them dry? The crystals were solid before you tried to re-x, then after re-x they became gooey? If this is the case, then it sounds like it's most likely an impurity from the heptane...

I bet this goo solidifies, sounds like you precipitated too fast. It seems logical that microscopic lattices of DMT molecules fall out too fast to join and make a crystal when this happens, resulting in what is pretty much a liquid or goo. It's the same substance. If you leave it alone it will probably solidify on its own over time, But any impurities will remain trapped. To to recrystallize at room temp then fridge then freezer for about 5 hours each.

Also remember the most impure spice falls to the bottom of the container first. Use something as tall and thin as can be practical to re-x, scrape out the nice stuff from the sides and recrystallize what is at the bottom.

From the first freeze precipitation the crystals where off white with some light brown coloring and dried with no detectable trace of goo.

I noticed the goo with the recrystallization of heptane. That one was cooled first in the fridge then the freezer but with heptane I think the crystals crash out rapidly at a certian temperature.

I didn't think the goo was from the plant because it was clear.

I just did a evaporation test on the heptane and it came out fine. I did the same test on the naphtha and there seems to be a gooey residue but I did it in a mason jar cap that has some form of soft plastic on the surface so that might have been the source of the residue so I am redoing the evap test again with glass.

The goo residue in the glass container that I recrystallized with has thickened up but is still not solid. I have had the lid on for most of the time it was sitting out though. I will let it air out more.

I thought the goo was a solvent impurity because it smelled like the solvent but maybe solvent was just trapped in dmt goo from the plant.

The heptane is clean so if I recrystallize with that then does anyone know the temperature which most of the crystals will fall out? I will try to slow down the cooling around that temp.
