well, my new girfriend is studying chemistry (yuhuuu!) and i decided to go to a class with her, that was about mechanisms! (i could actually follow most of what the teacher was saying there, thanks to the nexus!)
and i thought that it could be interesting to see the mechanism of a dmt extraction.
i searched all over the web but found nothing....
has anyone here in nexus done this?
thanx

Well, the reaction mechanism in a simple two phase extraction isn't all that exciting.

There isn't a whole lot of chemical change happening

Basically, there is a single proton (Hydrogen atom) bonding to the N in the DMT molecule.
Everything done in the DMT extraction is by manipulating this one hydrogen ion.

This proton gives the molecule a positive charge. This charge allows it to form salts, or be soluble in water.

The reaction happens when you alter the environment the DMT is present in.

When the pH is raised, the solution is full of greedy ions that will form a strong bond with any free protons. (water) the proton can't hold onto the N any longer and gets ripped off.

Now DMT has a neutral charge, and is a freebase.

Here I drew a picture.
