Hello, Smile

Has anyone experimented with extractions from acacia karroo Hayne? There is research done on the plant that reflects it's medicinal use throughout Africa but I am struggling to find information about it's tryptamine content.

Thanks,

colour

Good quality Syrian rue (Peganum harmala) for an incredible price!

Nen on Acacia karroo .. Seems there haven't been any phytochemical studies done so far?

If you find some in your area, maybe buy some ehrlich reagent, do a small crude extraction and test with the ehrlich to see if it contains tryptamines at least.... Then more assays can be done if at least it shows some potentially positive results.

..thanks endlessness..

indigo breeze..yes it's claimed by one source to contain DMT..a fairly good source..but there are no formal tests showing DMT..

there are now many rumours from south africa of a number of 'active' acacia species..

more documented testing is needed..

I have been searching and searching, this is where I end up. Seems like alot of people has asked this question before with no luck.

I will be attempting an extraction from A. Karroo as my first extraction.
Will post a new essay as soon as I get done with this.

Yeah I used to have more time to do test extractions on acacias that grow in south Africa - Esspecially the Alien ones.
Alot of our indigenous Acacia's are protected.

A. Cyclops showed promise, I'm waiting get my hands on some other acacia samples soon, just dunno when I'll be able to extract though.

I've never found a Karoo that was large enough to start taking from.

Maybe all us Afri-Nexians can get some samples tested professionally somewhere?

Well I've decided to go ahead and use the A karoo. Here is a pic of one I will use there is also one about half this size that I am going to try.

What species have you confirmed here in SA?

Do they have to be a certain size? whats the smallest it can be?

.. Awesome Arczilla , looking forward to seeing your results. What part of the plant are you planning on using for your extraction/test? Have you already harvested the plant material?

Best of luck! Keep us updated!

Actually I'm still researching and PM some members to get the best method of harvesting without damaging the tree. Also I dont really know what part of the tree to use?

I have now narrowed down the Tek, ingredients and the tree that Im going to use has been located, So I am almost set, just refining my harvest method and then its all go, but I want to make sure I have every possible angle covered so that I have a complete composition of the A. karoo extraction.

I really hope this yields something, If not that explains why no one is using that SP

Im still hoping for PRIMALWISDOM to answer some of my previous questions:

The best part to test for spice for not harming the tree will be the phyllodes, although I'm curious about bark content as well.

I have a few of these seeds, so I'm interested in your results.

Arczilla, did you ever get around to doing this extraction?

I conducted my first extraction attempt using Acacia Karroo a few days ago. I managed to get a tiny amount of yellowy crystals that didn't smell like DMT, not even when vaporised.

I wouldn't rule this spp. out yet, as this was my first extraction and I may have made some mistakes. I also believe the sample I got was far from ideal: Excess water and fertilizer nearby, and the upturned roots may have been exposed to rain.

I'll come back to this plant once I've practised on reliable species Very happy

potatokorpse - I read your other post in the acacia thread about extraction on Acacia karroo , you could try pulling with xylene or toulene and evapping to help grab the entire alkaloid profile (if present)

good luck.

Thanks, Shadow. I've already tossed my basified solutions, but still have plenty of bark to play with. I'll get hold of some toluene and try pulling with that.

I've got trunk bark and root bark. The trunk bark is still quite red but the root bark seems kinda greyish. Do you think the colour could indicate that the alkaloids have been washed out? AFAIK the red colour is from the tannins, so if tannins are washed out by rain, perhaps the alkaloids are also gone? I'm trying to decide whether to use grey root bark or red trunk bark.

Suggestions?

From the Acacia Study Group newsletter (#85):
Quote:
Almost all red color in plants is produced by anthocyanins which are powerful antioxidants that mop up damaging free radicals and reactive forms of oxygen in both animals and plants.

Although I've heard of red pigment indicating presence of tryptamines, I wouldn't expect there to be any reliable correlation between red pigment and present levels of alkaloids.

Rain can indeed result in reduciton of alkloids present, thou not "washed away" in the exact sense... Why excess rain drops alkaloid content, and what increases it

Ideally you could run a small extraction on both samples and report findings Rolling eyes ... Else, I would elect to use the trunk bark.
