Hello.

I've arrived at this forum with an question in my mind: Is set and setting important to avoid an bad trip?
The last 2 times i used it, was at rehab - that resulted in some sort of an unpleasant experience, since i was afraid of getting caught.

Or is this an result by my first experience with it? I was about that stupid, where i influenced by speed, and tried it - wich i don't remember much of. (Don't worry, i've learned from the experience..)

Hoping for some wise feedback - please dont judge me, i've recently been trough hell of an addiction with speed and opiates, and it's an eternal struggle to keep me sober.

With love
-Deily

I personally feel that set and setting are pretty vital to undertaking a proper journey. Intent for me also plays an equally vital part.

My personal opinion is that if you are doing this to overcome addiction problems then the above should if anything be ritualised, by yourself, into a method that brings about as much ease and relaxation as possible prior to dosing.

My own personal mini ritual for example is to open up windows and let in plenty of oxygen, have a quick whip round clearing the area and creating a bit of order, lighting some incense then meditating for 20-40 mins.

Apprehension and/or anxiety are natural and likely to be exacerbated if previous experiences have been harrowing. Expect an increase in heart rate and remind yourself it is ok to let go and that whatever happens you will be back within a small time frame and able to digest whatever experience you have just been through.

Then spend time integrating within and sharing any experiences or concerns with people on here (it can help, for sure).

I wish you the best in your attempts to heal Smile

I would first recommend not doing DMT in rehab.

If your worried about being judged I would say that you have something you know needs to be worked on. Cause it will happen and it's not something you should let inhibit you. If your thinking if set and setting I recommend not doing it somewhere you can get caught. Not only for that reason but wouldn't it be nice if someday we were allowed to use it legally? Actions like that will ensure that day won't come. So please be more responsible about your drug use.

You can't avoid a bad trip IMO. But doing it somewhere you feel safe would be smart.

Set and seting of course very important psycedelics unwrap you like an onion leaving you to see your true self clearly laid out before you.
You may feel buried pain and guilt or deep forgotten empathies so its important the set should be one of readiness to see and feel the true you that exists under all the denial and social conditioning.
Listening to a relaxing track that makes you happy is always a good way to make the trip start well. Like zenspice said prepare your space too. Be certain you will have at least a full hour to yourself uninterrupted.
Be kind to yourself relax beforehand and prepare to be the open minded student thats willing to learn no matter how serious the lesson is.
I truly believe dmt can play a part in addiction therapy but it must be used appropriately and with full respect.
Best of luck in your recovery.

Hi there!

Of course that set and setting are important before/during any psychedelic journey Smile With regard to DMT, I have a feeling that set+setting are perhaps even more important than with most of other, "slower", psychedelics.

I would dare to suggest to anyone not to rush into DMT, and be very careful with this powerfull (as well as powerfully unpredictable!) substance. I suggest waiting for better set+setting if these are not perfect now... I also think that the work with DMT should be preceded and accompanied by other forms of practice such as sobriety (i.e not mixing DMT with other "mutually incompatible" drugs) and proper diet, thinking about one´s intentions etc.).

Anyways - DMT is not a "miracle", is it? (Well, OK, it is a miracle, but it doesn´t always deliver what one may be expecting...). Frankly, I believe that there are tools better suited for "therapy" (deep psychological/therapeutical work) than smoked DMT. The point is that DMT is just so fast, and thus the visions may be too difficult to grasp, "understand", and work with... Just my too cents on the therapeutical potential of DMT... Wink

Be safe, and good luck Thumbs up

DMT works with what you give it, from your physical state of being, your mentality, all the way down to what you surround yourself with in the giving moments leading up to the experience.

Set and setting is of high importance. As others have stated, DON'T be doing this in rehab. Wait until your out of the confines of rehab and are able to relax in an environment that won't hinder your physiological state.

much love to ya,
tat

If you're in rehab, perhaps you should consider not taking any drugs whatsoever for awhile, knucklehead. Or, if that's not workable, maybe you should pack your bags and get high elsewhere, so as not to fuck up everyone else who's trying in earnest to save their lives and paying $1,000 a day to be there.

My guess is that this is in no way going to help with your addiction issues, and that if it's something you choose to pursue, you'll be dealing with bad ones frequently. Wait until you're in a better place (physically, mentally & emotionally), and you'll find it a nicer experience.

I've learned from my last trip, i don't actually feel any attraction to use DMT as an "way to get high", but more as an experience to travel behind the curtains of my consciousness.

What I've learned, is that i won't do it before i feel safe. That's what i experienced last time.

@Art, in Norway the government pays for your rehab, but i didn't just open an window and smoked it in a way where the result is that the house reeks of an exotic south-american tribe. I actually took time to wait until dark, where everyone was asleep - and went outside. I do respect that the other are trying to get clean.

Thanks for all the tips, i appreciate it!
I shall wait until i feel completely safe to do that journey again - I'm just afraid that i'm going to go trough the same experience since I've already felt the uncomfortable feeling it gave me.

Off-topic: I've heard that music isn't suiting for an trip because it wont help me focus so much, is this true? Or may i experience the best sides of the journey if i listen to some music that i feel safe with?

In regards to music I have to admit that every time I've gone to meet the elves I've done it with a musical landscape to dive into. Usually some ambient psychedelic, or fusion between Indian classical music and electronic soundscape style! It definitely worked as a vehicle to transport me into other realms, and when coming back into the fleshy body of this reality the music being played sounded like some vast cosmik joke, as if there were some energy playing games with the music and knew exactly what they were doing to my body-mind with every harmony, discord, sitar strum or tabla beat! It definitely heightened the experience and rendered it in glorious technicolor. (Off the top of my head 'The Kumba Mela Experiment' are great to listen to.)

Now, I don't know what the master Terence McKenna said about music in terms of Spice, but he was an advocate of an almost complete silence with no external stimuli when consuming a heroic dose of Mushrooms, so that may be something to consider as well..

Like all the guys have said before, set and setting is important in the physical sense as well as the mental sense. Whether these are one and the same...well.....
