I dug up some roots of a Mimosa tree from my back yard. This tree was real big, I bet 20-30 years old. I shaved the outer layer off, but no purple layer was there, there was no distinguishable purple layer from the rest of the inner bark, it was all just a yellow-ish wood color. I tried the fat pieces toward the tree, to the skinnier pieces 3-6 feet away from the tree.

I have used mimosa bark in powdered form before, ordered from Brazil, it was always pink/purple.

In the pictures shown on the Nexus of raw bark, there was always a purple layer underneath the outer bark, but from the tree roots that I have always gotten from the States, there was no purple layer.

Is there a big difference between US mimosa tree bark and Brazilian tree bark?
Are the concentrations higher in Brazil?
Where is the purple layer in the US mimosa bark?
Is it regional? I am in the south.

Light.

What is the scientific name of the tree you dug up? How did you identify it?

Without a picture or any information beyond the very limited description you provided, it's hard to know anything about what plant you are dealing with.

That said, I'd bet a nice pile of DMT that your "Mimosa tree" is not Mimosa tenuiflora, but rather Albizia julibrissin, commonly referred to as "false Mimosa." This plant does not contain DMT, but does have a calming/soothing effect and is used by a number of herbalists.

..AFAIK Mimosa tenuiflora does not grow in the US (except in not so common cases of cultivation)
it is found in southern Mexico..and beyond..

It is one I'm sure. They are all around, everyone identifies them. I know what they are from the distinct leaves. They do grow a lot in Louisiana. The leaves are hard to miss.

If you are sure of what it is, why are you asking? Wink
In all likelihood, you probably do not have M. tenuiflora...sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

M. tenuiflora does not occur naturally in LA. I don't think you can find a single documented natural occurrence of M. tenuiflora in the US (as nen888 said).

Just because people call it "Mimosa" does not mean it is M. tenuiflora or that it contains DMT. Mimosa refers to a genus, not a species, which contains a number of different plants, not all of which contain DMT. A. julibrissin also exhibits compound leaves (as do a number of other trees).

Does the tree in question look something like this?

..there are no botanical records of it growing in your area (let alone commonly)..
as SozzleBerry suggested it may be Albizia Julibrissin (often incorrectly called a mimosa in louisiana)
..there are records of Mimosa pudica (sensitive plant) but it's very small..
Acacia farnesiana , which could be mistaken as a mimosa (though quite different to a botanist) grows there..

but, no M. tenuiflora (except maybe in private collections)

The tree looks just like that snoozle, the leaves and even the purple flowers I like to think of as antennas to outer space.

That's NOT Mimosa hostilis then....

Thats Albizia jullibrisin. It does NOT contain DMT. It is just sometimes called 'Mimosa', but as said before, Mimosa is a genus and not a single species, there are many which are not hostilis, and don't have DMT. And in this specific case it isn't even a part of the genus, it is an altogether different plant that just has the common name of Mimosa.

Mimosa hostilis does not grow naturally in the US and it has white flowers.

Thanks for setting me straight, I have been trying to make some out of this bark with no results, haha, no wonder why. Thought I saw some crystals at the bottom of the petri dish, but when I scraped them onto the paper, they disappeared, must have been just ice...Sad

Well, with this you kind of proved that there was no DMT in that species. Which is a good thing to know.

Kind regards,
