sooooo...I have been cruising around on this and many other forums now and was hoping to get a little bit more involved in the nexus community. Though I am somewhat reluctant due to the whole "somebody is always watching you" deal, I felt I might be able to add some information and learn a lot more info. than when I was cruising around through the forums. I am from the beautiful island of Maui, HI where Acacia Confusa likes to growSmile I am very interested in this plant due to the fact its related to a couple other trees around here. Supposedly so does the mimosa Hostilis, but I have yet to see that. So yeah good to be here and hope to hear from the community!

STS is a community for people interested in growing, preserving and researching botanical species, particularly those with remarkable therapeutic and/or psychoactive properties.

i am moving to kihei in 6 days.

i had not heard of confusa (unlike mearnsii and kiawe and other invasive mimosoideae) growing on that island until reading your post.

do you have any more information re: confusa on maui?

Mostly from what I have seen all the acacia confusa is on Haleakala and not the West Maui Mountains, though I may be wrong. They definitely grow upcountry area though. Ive seen some young ones growing in Pukulani park I think. And a couple others off to the side of the roads, but mostly upcountry. Try searching "acacia confusa maui" something might pop up. Do you know if the kiawe contains any alkaloids? It would be nice to be able to extract from a tree that grows so plentiful everywhere in kihei as apposed to the beautiful Acacia Confusa.

well it certainly has alkaloids.
whether or not they are of interest is another story.

i am planning on harvesting some kiawe rootbark (RB harvesting is part of the reason i'm attracted to such unwanted and invasive plant), and doing some reagent/TLC testing.

but that may be a while yet so we will see how it goes.

the only thing i know is Leucaena leucocephala is active, but unavailable to the kitchen chemist due to its' high mimosine content.

but nen888 is the man to ask about mimosoideae (seriously, he has so much acacia knowledge packed into that squishy primate computer it amazes me)

Thanks for the info! I've seen his posts frequently. how would I go about msging nen888? I'm also very interested in TLC testing. I've still yet to understand it even though I remember doing a simple one in highschool chem class. But I didn't pay very good attention...:/ oh well. It would be awesome if the kiawe contained some goodies.

i too am fairly chemically illiterate, so i am not the best person to ask re: TLC.
endlessness has a link in his signature explaining everything better than i could (it isn't exactly an easy read).
anything i said would be parroting what skimming i have done so far.

i think you have to wait till full membership (got my vote!) to pm anyone, but if you catch him in chat (or maybe even if he sees this thread) he would probably be willing to help out.
