I just divided a 35 inch san pedro into 7" cuttings.

i know how to callous over and prepare the cuttings for rooting in a dark place, etc.

my question is about the already rooted 7" 'stump' that is left. Do i pull it out and set it aside, or place the whole container in cool dark place until it skins over? seems less damage to roots would occur this way?

If it already has roots, there isn't any need to let it callous over on the top. I'd just plant it and put it in a fairly sunny area (dependent on if it's been in the sun, otherwise it will need to be hardened off to it)

Wipe the bottom of the cutting with a clean paper towel and 70-80% IPA. Sit in a clean dust free envirement to allow the cutting to callous. Takes min 3 weeks and I have had cuttings ordered sit in the ventilated box for well over a year with no problems rooting them.

Once calloused place cutting 1/2-3/4 inches, depending on cutting size, into damp, not wet soil! Place in a window with NO or very little direct sunlight. If the cutting is starting to wrinkle move to even less light sill.
Its rooted when the growth tip begins growing. Will be yellowish green at first. Once this tip grows move to a window sill with more light. If growth tip is wrinkling, again reduce sun exposure t find the right spot.

When the tip turns a healthy green, the cactus is ready for full-ish sun out doors.

Takes 2-3 months depending on health of cutting and your green thumb.

Leave the rooted stump in the soil. Disturbing it will just slow down future growth. All you have to do is protect it from getting wet till it callouses. If that means bringing it inside, fine. Once it's calloused put it back where it was, assuming it liked it's spot. It'll start throwing pups in a month or two.

FWIW, I've never used IPA on fresh cut cacti. Just use a clean knife and place the cutting in a dry area with some air circulation to callous. Near an A/C vent works for me.
