This is more of a question than a suggestion:
Is there any particular reason why you've blacklisted the GIF file format? As it is now, the forum will not accept avatars that are of this file format, why?

GIF's have 256 colors, and thus are very small in size compared even to a heavily compressed JPEG.

The main reason is that we do not want any animating images for the avatars. We like to keep it a restful place here without all the flashing. On the DMT-Nexus it is the content of the posts that matters.

It is also the reason why no images are allowed in the signature.

But isn't there other ways around that rather than just blacklisting the entire file format?
You could use something like size restrictions, or have animated textures turned off by default (but make it so members can enable them if they want to). But maybe there's no good way of checking if a GIF is animated or not? Going by file size alone doesn't tell much if it's a 2 frame GIF. Ah well...
