Quote:Deputies bust DMT lab; teenager faces multiple charges
A 19-year-old Lexington man is facing charges after deputies with the Davidson County Sheriff's Office allege he was in possession of high-grade marijuana and manufactured dimethyltryptamine.
The Davidson County Sheriff's Office Vice/Narcotics Unit conducted a drug investigation Wednesday at 1700 Perryman Road, the residence of 19-year-old Cameron Lane.
During the investigation, detectives located 129.5 grams of high-grade marijuana, several items of drug paraphernalia and what was believed to be a dimethyltryptamine or "DMT" lab, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.
DMT is a hallucinogen formulated from a tree root and found in either South America or Brazil, said Davidson County Sheriff David Grice.
During their investigation, detectives contacted the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Clandestine Lab Team.
The SBI responded to the location Thursday to process the DMT lab, the news release stated.
Saturday, Lane was arrested and charged with possession with intent to sell marijuana, maintaining a dwelling to keep a controlled substance, manufacture a schedule I drug (DMT) and possession of drug paraphernalia. Lane was placed in the Davidson County Detention Center under a $50,000 secured bond and was given a court date of March 26. SourceQuote:Lexington teen charged with manufacturing DMT
LEXINGTON, N.C. — Deputies say a Lexington teenager has been charged with manufacturing dimethyltryptamine, also known as DMT.

The N.C. SBI was called to the scene to process the suspected lab, deputies said. Cameron Gray Lane, 19, was arrested Saturday in connection with the investigation, deputies said.
Lane is charged with possession with intent to sell marijuana, maintaining a dwelling to keep a controlled substance, manufacture a schedule I drug (DMT) and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The suspect was placed in the Davidson County Jail under a $50,000 secured bond. how can they charge you for having paraphernelia? They can do that in the US? They always call extracting manufacturing..and they always talk about DMT being made from the rootbark of some tree, or being created from the bark of all trees etc..they never just say that DMT is present in all mammals and thousands of plants and can be EXTRACTED from them. I hate the media so much. Long live the unwoke.

Re: paraphernalia, in some states a weed pipe carries a harsher penalty than the herb itself. It's madness.
A legal cigar or cigarette paper becomes illegal paraphernalia and subject to additional criminal charges if it's found near weed.

That makes two in NC this month, with the Fox News report. Everyone in that area should take a couple plays off, it sounds like.

I live in Ohio and before this year, there was a stiffer penalty for having paraphernalia than there was for having less than 100 grams of cannabis. Now, both are minor misdemeanors.

This includes grinders, containers, etc. They can also charge you with selling if your drugs are seperated in any way; I personally knew a guy in high school who got charged with selling because he had weed in his grinder plus 2 grams in a cigarette celephane. Seeds and stems count as well. They can also tack on as many additional charges as they please, or charge you twice with the same crime. You'll notice they charged him for manufacturing in the building on top of manufactering a schedule 1 substance. So he basically got charged with the same crime twice. Where I live, using a communication device (phone, pager, etc) to make a drug deal is considered a felony. So is purchasing drugs, even for pot which is a misdemeanor (less serious than a felony). Basically, you can get busted buying weed (assuming it's less than 28 grams, or 1 oz) and thats 2 felonies and a misdemeanor right off the bat, but if you get caught with weed, it's just a misdemeanor. If they catch you growing, they uproot the entire plant and weigh it, dirt included. This additional weight is used in court to make it sound like you are in pocession of more drugs than you actually are. Also, we have a charge called "Sale of a counterfeit substance" which they tack on if you're selling something thats in the legal grey area. It carries a harsher penalty than regular drug selling. Go war on drugs, I guess. "In a controversy, the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves" - Buddha

One thing that bothers me about this one, besides the anger and sadness I feel about the war on some drugs in general and the damage to this kid 's life, is the fact that he appears not to have possessed DMT or source materials (no charges there). So why the DMT charge? Were they looking for it specifically? In other threads it seems the cops stumble on it accidentally. Lexington is about 25 minutes from Greensboro, where the young couple was busted a few weeks ago, so maybe they're related cases?
