hello

last night i finished precipertating some lovely DMT flakes from water using sodium carb.

when i had filtered the based water and collected all my flakes i noticed that the water was still pretty white and cloudy and i thought there must still be DMT in the water that hadnt precipitated (even though i had added Sodium Carb untill no more clouding appeared). I thought i would add some lye as i thought that maybe the PH hadnt been raised enough to precip all the goodies.

This morning i had some lovely fluffy looking precipitate flaoting in the jar so i popped it in the fridge where it will stay for a few days to see what else precips.

I am guessing that adding the lye forced out the remaining DMT which the sodium carb had failed to do.

I dont think that the solution of water and DMT fumerate was concentrated enough for the sodium carb to do its job so the ph increase produced by the lye was needed, does that seem right??? I cant imagine anything else has precipertated by adding the lye.

cheers

The sodium carbonate precipitation takes some time, maybe 3-4 days to settle and for all the cloudiness to disappear, but it could be that pH was hot high enough, or it could also be that the ionic strength of the solution wasn't high enough for dmt to crash out. Ionic strength is, in lay terms the amount of ions dissolved in a solution and the more the ionic strength of water, the more dmt freebase becomes insoluble in it. Ionic strength can be upped by adding lye (as you did) but with table salt as well. I think recently some people reported adding table salt to the extractions to push more dmt in the solvent during pulls.

Lastly, can you weigh how much you got out with sodium carbonate and how much extra with the ladded lye?

cheers for the reply Infundibulum.

i had the sodium carbed water in the fridge for at least a week so i decided it was long enough to precip what it was going to precip.

i will give the jar a few more days in the fridge and then filter and weigh and report back.

cheers

Just a quick update.

Cleaned up about a gram of DMT, 725mg precipitated with sodium carb and then a further 113mg with lye.

Also the flakes that precipitated with lye were noticeably lighter/whiter in colour than the ones which precipitated with SC. Any one have any idea why this might be?

sorry to drag this up again but it happened again and i was wondering if doing a warm water wash of the lye precipiated DMT would clear it of any potential lye contamination? (i think i have read it would but cant find the thread)

my thinking is that the warm water wash will melt the DMT and allow any lye trapped in it to dissolve into the water. if this is true would pH testing the water wash be an indicator of the presence of lye? or would the DMT change the pH of the water?

cheers
