I dont really like this whole christmas thing at all. I like the origional holiday season thing but that has little to do with christ or this modern ritual where we all worship the economy on Dec.25th. I can't help that my family still wants to buy me things..so I go over to my parents for christmas and just sort of shut up about it and try to be thankful I have a family..but still the whole just does not seem to be a good thing. I dont buy people stuff for christmas. Christmas and thanksgiving are two holidays I really loath. I like the winter holidays but I dnt like how for many people it's just a time to go the mall and consume..and thanksgiving is just about how the white invaders want to feel so great for having the natives for dinner as "guests" in their own damn country after trying to wipe them out. Got to love western holidays and what they have degraded into. Sorry to have to be so cynical here but it is just how I feel about it. Yule is just a sort of sacred time for my ancestors and I cant help but feel a bit sad over what it has become. It is not really a sacred time any longer. It's just basterdized by bible thumpers and marketers and anyone else trying to make a dollar. If I even had the money to go out and start buying a bunch of stuff for people I would rather just donate it to the rainforest or starving people or something. They obviously need it more than some middle class white people in the western world. I cant say I am out of that whole consumer situation or mindset fully..it is hard to really leave that when your raised within it..but looking around at it taking place like this just sort of makes me dissapointed in all of us. Long live the unwoke.

I feel you Jamie. I'm simply being thankful for spending time with family. I also don't buy gifts, but I am making my own raw chocolates for people and putting together some awesome food /dessert.

Thanks to my family for their lovely gifts. P.s i agree with Jamie and don't much care for CHRISTmas.

Im with most people on this one.. Christmas is consumerism/materialism at its finest .. Though nothing I tell my loved ones will cease the presents. Though, as Jamie has noted, I too go to family gatherings and am grateful for the gifts and the time spent with my family. However, I have a confession to make... As I had a little extra funds I decided to splurge and buy myself what some might define necessities .. A good torch lighter and some syrian rue Anyways, Happy Festivus to the Rest of Us! I got the book "A celebration of wattle" by Maria Hitchcock.... so far an amazing read. lots of good photos, new species I'd never heard of, poems and stories... lots of history regarding aussie acacia.. I also got a really nice handwoven handbag, $250, my aunties home made green tomato relish, southern barbecue sauce, peach and cinnamon jam and a little samurai toy representing self control.. and of course the presence of my family and love ones who i've missed very much and yes I feel you too jamie, I think christmas is kind of what you make of it though. I don't like the overindulgent consumerism part of it, and I don't have much of a part in it myself...I do however enjoy that it brings my family and my friends together and I get to enjoy the smiles on everybodies faces

I'm glad you posted your comment Jamie....I feel the exact same way about Thanksgiving and Christmas. This Christmas has been particularly way more stressful than most for many of those same reasons you stated. My favorite holiday is dia de los muertos/ all souls day. So much more meaning for me anyways. When asked what I wanted I stated that I didn't want anything but if you absolutely have to get me anything...buy me some san pedro cuttings or a salvia plant. I was looked at like "are you serious? thats it" . My take is anything else is all crap anyway my spirituality is worth way more to me than any material good. I'm happy with my tripwear regardless....aka pajamas! Merry christmas and a happy new year everyone!

Yeah Christmas isn't as great once you've seen it as the materialistic consumer mindset that it's turned into, but it's nothing to be a humbug about. I only asked for sage smudge sticks, and I got 'em, which is nice. I also got a laptop, some herbs to grow, some soap, some pyramid-shaped thing with moons and stars cut out of it that a candle goes inside of and shines through. Oh, and a gps. I got more than I asked for that's for sure. I'll use and appreciate all of it though because I always use the internet and the gps is good for driving to shows and stuff. [center]Sophia's Light

I look to you, Lady of Truth, most ancient One, yet eternal youth,to keep me safe, protect my heart, and with the wisdom you impart, fill up my empty mind and soul,so that, my Lover, you can make whole, all that was broken in this day –and that is what I ask and pray.

I am also not one to ask for anything on Christmas. Im 18, so my parents wanted to spoil me this year I guess, since it was my last Christmas as a "kid" lol. I specifically told them that I did not want anything except for the worlds hottest hotsauce lmao. What I received - Literally the worlds hottest hotsauce (well, one of them)... I was so ecstatic about this haha! (1.5 million Scoville Units!) A laptop north face jacket north face backpack pair of running shoes 64GB usb flash drive Because of my view on material items and life, I am somewhat upset that they spent so much money on these things, BUT...I am EXTREMELY grateful to have received all of these gifts. My parents are very loving, not because they got me all of these things, but for what they do each and every day. I appreciate their company so much. The material items are just a nice bonus

I've been a BahHumbug type my whole life, starting when I was in my early teens and began identifying myself as an atheist. And I did manage to browbeat my folks into not buying me anything, ever (my 42 year old little brother still lives with them and more than makes up for that).
...but then I went and married a girl born on Christmas day. So that's the end of my being free of the holidays.
And after being with her 20 years and hanging out with her crazy family every holiday season, I've slowly grown into it. I still am mostly exempt from giving or receiving stuff (wife got me a nice hoodie, I remodeled the living room and did a few nice tattoo sessions on her). But now we have a kid, and I need no excuses for spoiling her. So she got a little red tricycle. And a bean bag. And some groovy art supplies. And books, lots of them.
All along, my objections were futile. Oh well.

Quad cores and 32gbs of Spice books too. Santa gets a ![Thumbs up](/forum/images/emoticons/thumbsup.png) this year.
