Flaming Lips are great, and put on a fantastic live show. Beck is cool but I'm a little weirded out by the fact that he's a Scientologist.

^ This, no doubt about it.

The Lateralus album in particular.

Specifically, Reflection is (for me) the most emotionally moving, spiritually profound and personally significant piece of music written by anyone, ever.

Porcupine Tree.

I linked the track "the incident" as it was the title track on their most recent album.

I've really been getting into these guys lately. Moving away from more brutal metal lately. My musical tastes are in a constant state of flux.

Here's something amazing I discovered recently.

I was just pondering the concept of this thread.

There is no best band in the world.

The bottom line is some bands songs are better than some songs by other bands.

I remember having an argument with my sister in law because she said the Beatles were the best band in the world because they sold the most records. This would equate to a McDonalds burger flipper being the worlds greatest chef. If we were to take a vote on the matter, it wouldn't be a conclusion of quality as much as it would be an evaluation of the effect of marketing.

So now that I've put a semblance of controversy into this thread, I leave you with this:

I remember telling my brother that I thought pink floyd were boring. The actual truth was that the song he selected at the time didn't match the time of day at which it was being played and I was drunk.

Then to piggy back this a little further, is a band five men or can a band simply be five fingers.

Once again I guess I'm drunk Smile

Both Beats Antique and Tool completely blow my mind with their live performances. The albums from both groups are fantastic imo and very suitable for tripping. DMT with Beats Antique has a very special place in my heart and memory.

Haven't caught any live performances but I enjoy SOJA as well. A couple off the newest album below.

The inner soul is full of joy. Reveal my secrets and sew me whole. With each day, "I" heeds your call.
You may not care the slightest and may not be the brightest, but from here "I" sees you're mighty for you created it all.

And the jumbling sea rose above the wall.

Through this chaos comes the order you enthrall.

Probably one of my favorite bands of all time.
And this video remind me of an awesome journey Smile
I live in Aruba with Elvis and Makaveli. We produce sick beats all day and make up silly stories on the internet. All of my stories are fictitious, must be all the second hand pot smoke from Tupac.

Good pick. Mike Patton really hits the sweet spot for me in terms of composition. Brilliant.

If Mr. Bungle were still around they might be my choice for "best band in the world," just in terms of sheer bewildering talent and weirdness at least. Wink

This summer was incredible! The best I've heard them since 2003, and some serious jams for ages!. The video/audio quality of this video isn't the best, but check this set out;

Id have to say the music from the LYRICUS TEACHING ORDER and WINGMAKERS. . .

and a real artist would have to be Frank Zappa - though it's not from 2012.

If it is from 2012 - then it's my own compositions Very happy

I so wanted to share my opinion, and I couldn't post in the real thread, so I got fed up and made this thread.

For me, of the last decade, The Mars Volta (and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez) would most likely be at the top of the pyramid for me as the one of the most important and groundbreaking. But then again there are so many bands in the underground that are really legit and could be considered one of the best (which I think is a bit of an arbritary concept in music, the best is purely down to the taste of the listener).

Case in point: Earthless

I saw these guys a week ago and it was mind blowing. An hour long improvisation (with structured riffs that they'd segue into at the nod of a head). Only about 100 people in attendence but they were in the zone and the guitarist, Isaiah Mitchell, is amazing, easily one of the best guitarists and musicians I've seen in my 15 years of seeing and playing live music. I met him and had a chat at the merch booth before the show and he was a humble, lovely guy which blows my mind even more. They definitely are only in it for the love of music and the cosmic nod, unbelievable!

P.S. Check out part 2, it's where the song really goes into unchartered outerspace

"The love I've made is the shape of my space"

I think there is, and it's most certainly not phish or tool or mars volta.

The best of 2012 is GWAR, hands down.
