I know there are a lot of horror stories about smoking dmt resin, but I just have left over stuff that wasn't finished from previous sessions. It looks exactly like honey, nothing black or the sort. Anyways I'd love to hear what you all think!

Also, first post!

Hello and Welcome,

what kind of horror stories are there ? I'm just curious..

when it's still an oil and doesn't taste harsh, i wouldn't know why not to smoke it.

I vaporize using the machine and while there is oil in the bottle after the smkoke, it crystallizes after some hours. Does the resin crystallize ? Maybe when you spread it out on a flat sourface ?

You could redisolve in some small amount of warm solvent and crystalize to separate from possible inactives.

Where does the resin originate from ?

On different boards I hear about people having negative trips and panic attacks from smoking resin quite often.

The resin is just leftover from what did not end up getting vaporized from previous sessions.

hmmm.. maybe it's because of dimishing potency so that a breakthrough becomes more unlikely and one doesn't get as far out of actual reality making it in a way more difficult for some ?

Well, there are some breakdownproducts due to pyrolysis. Maybe it has to do with them having some effect.

In my personal experience i have had SEVERE negative reactions when smoking DMT resin.

I've never actually purposely smoked it to be quite honest, but i've accidentally vaped/burnt it up in a DMT laced pipe a couple times and had HORRIBLE muscular tightening and really HORRIBLE bodily reactions. It is extremely uncomfortable and it freaks you out big time, thus the panic attacks people are claiming.

My solution is that i always keep my dmt pipes SUPER CLEAN and i use efficient pipes that don't really leave that kind of resin.

There is a difference between melted dmt that has started running down the back of a GVG and what i consider "DMT RESIN" though. The "RESIN" is like the really dark stuff that builds up in a pipe if your using a regular pipe and either putting your dmt on top of the bowl or the sandwhich method.

I did some research and found a mass spectrum of N,N-Dimethyltryptamine. When one takes a mass spectrum the compound usually is pyrolised and the fragments analyzed. Pyrolysis is pretty much what happens when the spice gets burnt. The Peaks are:

m/z: 58 - Main Peak - Trimethylamine which is a weak poison
m/z: 59 - M+1 ?
m/z: 131 - would be the other half of the molecule but is barely present so it undergoes further fragmentation
m/z: 44 - C3H8 - Propane
m/z: 42 - C3H6 - Cyclopropane - Is an anaesthetic when inhaled
m/z: 130 - C9H8N - ? (Molecules with molecular formula C9H8N
m/z: 143 - C10H9N - ? (Molecules with molecular formula C10H9N

There are many more, but these are the main peaks.

The analysis is taken from MassBank Record: JP003741 .

The Picture is taken from some DEA Website but doesn't match the analysis completely.

5htp, i really enjoy your info but am a bit confused when you say "mass spectrum." are you referring to mass spectrum dmt ("jungle spice" ) or dmt that has been heated and thus turned into other chemicals?

as for the op, i think you should be fine as long as you maybe meditate or use some other means of calming yourself before. i had always thought bad trips from resin were from people smoking more than they had intended to.

The mass spectrum is what you see in the picture. You have the molecules represented by their atomic mass on the x-axis and the relative amount detected on the y-axis.

The substance tested is N,N-DMT, not Jungle Spice. I think this may have been synthetic DMT (in the analysis, not the picture).

And yes, I think this is what may happen when burning pure DMT. With the Jungle there may be several other sunstances.

But this is just a guess. Where the Trimethylamine is very likely, i`m not 100% confident about the other peaks. I'm no chemical analyst Razz

One thing I forgot to consider was, that when actually smoking/burning the spice, one also introduces oxygen, which makes the variety of molecules even bigger.

I've had resin build up in a glass piece that looked oily at first and hardened into a wax. Scraped it out and have had a few experiences with it, none negative. The experiences were all a bit different, subjectively, than normal DMT. The best I can describe is moving slightly away from weird and towards silly. Lots of laughter.

I'd recommend evap/melting the resin/wax with herb or changa for easier dosing.

To the op: check the faq entry entitled "is my dmt ok to smoke?"

Regarding the byproducts formed when vaporising dmt, its true there are many possible byproducts that can be formed, but due to the highly unstable and non-uniform heating nature when burning, plus the mentioned presence of oxygen (as opposed to the very consistent heating and inert carrier gas and other standirdized conditions of a gc-ms), I don't think its right to expect same or similar byproducts. Also, notice its an electron impact collision at the mass spectrometer what creates those fragments, not the heat as suggested.

In any case, smoking = burning = unknown and possibly irritating and even toxic byproducts. That's why we strongly suggest a vaporization method such as the gvg or the inspirator mkII instead of smoking methods for dmt usage.

But isn't it the heat that causes the Molecule to degrade into fragments. So you say, the fragments exist first when they hit the detector ? I thought, heat would cause the bindings to break and the detector notices these fragments ?

Nope, the heat is in the first part of the machine, the gas chromatograph. The substance is heated to vaporize, and a carrier gas helps taking it through the column. During this, there is no breakdown (in theory...) of the substance or mixture of substances, it is just being carried through the column where the different substances separate due to their polarity.

It is only once they reach the mass spectrometer, which is a separate instrument, that the separated substances are bombarded with electrons, and that is what breaks the substances down into different fragments and then gets detected. Check my signature for a bit more on how these instruments work.

Ahh okay, then I confused this fact with where in a lecture about GC/MS we heated styrofoam to 500 °C and were said we pyrolise it (which we did ?). I thought this would be common practise (pyrolising in the injector and analysing the fragments with the detector) and also the database where I found the information didn't state much about the method/machine used for analysis.

ive accidentally burned dmt a few times in my bowl, smoked resign from it, and have never had a negative side affect from it. i do clean my pipe quite often but ive gone quite a while without also. from the "little" experiments ive done ive found out imo a bad dmt trip is only caused when you dont relax and let go. i live with quite bad anxiety but i find dmt extremely relieving once i come back.

i have had an extremely bad trip from dmt(clean and fresh bowl), bad feelings, like i was going to die, hard core panic attack feeling with a morphing stomach of nauseousness. i was extremely hot and sweaty just like the panic attacks i get on a normal basis. once i had this really bad experience, i wanted to know why this time was so much worse than anything else.. there were a few factors that were different that time than others.

i ate some greasy food and had a full stomach before the trip, i smoked a lot more than usual, and i had a bit of caffeine earlier that day. caffeine makes me on edge and anxious, and before the trip i tried breathing and meditation but still had that hard beating feeling in my chest and was on edge.

since then i have eaten a ton of food before a trip and took a xanax to stay calm, perfect trip. ive tried the same dose or higher, also on xanax, and had a perfect trip. i have burned dmt and smoked dmt resign since then, also with no bad side effects(except sore lungs). i have not yet tried to purposely get anxious before a trip but i have purposely tried to stay alert, and it makes me nauseous and makes my mind start to race and my body gets pretty tense. once i relax and let go, all the negative feelings go away.

hope that helps, i havent had a bad trip again since Smile

Just to clarify... When I referenced bad reactions I was not talking about a bad trip. And i'm pretty sure the OP wasn't talking about just a simple "bad trip" either.

I can confirm having horrible, and extremely uncomfortable body load associated with smoking/vaping the by products of burnt/smoked spice. The anxiety that comes from smoking/vaping whatever these biproducts is due to a physical reaction that occurs, not a mental reaction as would be attributed to a "bad trip". There is something in the biproduct that causes your entire body to stiffen up like a board and it is such a crazy unnatural feeling that it definitely caused alot of anxiety for me that was unrelated to the actual trip. It will literally make your entire body stiff as a board and unable to move, along with a creepy crawly feeling that all of your muscles are going into rigormortis or something. it will creep up your body and it has also caused my chest to tighten up to the point where i wasn't sure if it was just muscular tension or if my insides were actually tightening up. Trust me, you do not want this to happen.

I started a topic about the bad reaction back when i first joined the nexus and got similar responses.

As endlessness stated, the best option is to never BURN your spice. I know alot of people don't have GVG's or Machine type pipes. If you don't have alot of money then the machine is the way to go! I've always been able to vaporize my dose completely with the machine.

But if you have the cash, then get the GVG. It will be the best pipe you've ever used for dmt and you can finally stop wasting so much dmt on these other methods! I LOVE MY GVG! Love

hmm my bad then if im wrong. i guess i really havent heard of that happening from just the biproducts, but i dont know much, only from experience. but by bad trip though, i do mean physical feelings, not just a negative state of mind. i layed there in complete terror and also felt really tense slightly painful and felt like i couldnt breath, which i found very similar to a panic attack. it was an extreme body load while i was tripping for about 3-5 minutes. it felt like i had a bowling ball morphing around in my stomach also on the edge of getting sick. once i gained a sense of reality i tried to fight it off completely, keeping my eyes open and curled up in a ball and felt like i was suffering. it continued for about 10 more minutes then completely went away but my body felt weak and tense/sore still afterwords. i thought i had a seizure or something

yep, thats gotta be the same thing, just a slightly different way of explaining it than me. I think we're on the same page, RustySpoon. I just always considered a "Bad Trip" more of a mental thing than a physical thing. Considering that i have much experience with DMT, i have narrowed down the variables and this bad physical reaction is definitely due to something in the dmt runoff/resiny stuff. I wish i knew more about it but its very difficult to find actual testing that supports some sort of biproduct that would cause this type of effect. Its even difficult to find testimonials of others who've had similar experiences honestly!

This has happened to me maybe 3-4 times over the years.

its extremely terrifying its only happened once so far to me. ive done it many many times and i just noticed i get sort of similar effects when i force myself to stay aware of whats going on, i start to feel bad physical feelings but never as bad as before but ive been scared crapless to try it with out xanax again. but possibly in the future i will have the guts to try and reproduce the bad feelings, which would sort of tie it to anxiety leading to panic attacks. maybe something in the biproducts are causing more of an anxious feeling causing you to fight the trip resulting in severe panic attacks? i still notice my body get tense(on xanax) but i always pay attention now to how tense i get, and when i relax my body it goes away and get a huge surge that takes me deeper into the trip, without xanax i cant automatically relax my body though. idk im very interested in this subject and would love to understand it more.
