Random and maybe stupid but most of us were aware that the company was shutting down. Now it looks like they could not be shutting down. Sounds like a plot to get everyone to go buy their "last Twinkies" and or other goodies, ho ho's. Well if this was their plan then they sure as hell succeeded. I liked one marketer's suggestion that a good approach to making rubbish food like that survive and become successful is advertising it to the hippies (presumably a health-conscious demographic) as retro-kitsch. It was assumed that the hippies would then joyfully embrace the twinkies and the little debbies out there.

Lol maybe true, but can all the hippies afford this stuff. IDK, i know someone out of a job due to hostess going out of business. seems like a lot of fuss for a "marketing gimmick". "let those who have talked to the elves, find each other and band together" -TMK
In a society in which nearly everybody is dominated by somebody else's mind or by a disembodied mind, it becomes increasingly difficult to learn the truth about the activities of governments and corporations, about the quality or value of products, or about the health of one's own place and economy. In such a society, also, our private economies will depend less upon the private ownership of real, usable property, and more upon property that is institutional and abstract, beyond individual control, such as money, insurance policies, certificates of deposit, stocks, etc. And as our private economies become more abstract, the mutual, free helps and pleasures of family and community life will be supplanted by a kind of displaced citizenship and by commerce with impersonal and self-interested suppliers... The great enemy of freedom is the alignment of political power with wealth. This alignment destroys the commonwealth - that is, the natural wealth of localities and the local economies of household, neighborhood, and community - and so destroys democracy, of which the commonwealth is the foundation and practical means.” - Wendell Berry

It is pretty normal that when a company goes bankrupt that other companies or external sponsors step in to take over the products that are succesful. The name 'twinkies' is clearly a name that can bring in money so it does not surprise me that external parties are looking for ways to pick up this brand. And in this process they try to keep the pace of the media coverage as high as possible, it's free marketing after all. This all sounds like normall economics. Kind regards, The Traveler

Hostess itself is shut down and they let go 18,500 employees. They are selling their assets and keeping some shops open in order to sell the remaining products that have already been baked. The government is allowing for compensation of workers in these remaining shops. The most popular products will be bought and sold by other companies in the future. This you can guarantee. Part of the bankruptcy process is paying back your creditors and trying to reconcile your debt. The idea of bankruptcy is you borrowed 5 apples, but only have 1 apple, and 3 oranges. But someone will pay you 2 apples for those 3 oranges. So the courts make you sell the 3 oranges for the 2 apples, and then pay back your creditors.
In the case of a company like hostess the Name/Rights/Trademarks to "Twinkies" are sold. As well as the facilities, the trucks, every major asset that was on the balance sheet of the company essentially. Even the employee's can be sold as an asset, yes you can't sell people outright, but you can sell the labor and time that goes into acquiring the correct people needed to produce a Twinkie.
Where things get tricky is when they use shadow companies to be creditors, and in turn end up funneling money back to the bigwigs at the company from the sale of these assets.
