A simple google search will inform you on the disease. Essentially people lose their ability to sleep and die within 6-18 months. They have tried all kinds of treatments such as barbiturates, but they only worsen the disease.

DMT seems to put you in a REM like state of mind. So if these people can't ever sleep, couldn't they take some DMT to somewhat remedy this? There are absolutely no treatments for this disease and everyone dies, so there's really nothing to lose by giving it a shot.

The only question would be if DMT just won't work on these people as their brain just wouldn't react the way it's suppose to. It would be very interesting if someone could get in contact with someone who has fatal familial or a family member of someone who has the disease and see what they think.

there's not really a solid answer to that question. i'd be leaning towards probably not.. though strange and miraculous things have happened before with dmt. my housemate was having really bad issues in his back and he came out of a hyperspace journey never to have the problem again... we don't know what happened there.

Hello wickedgoodtrader,

Welcome to the Nexus. This sounds like a horrible condition.

No one here, not even licensed MD's or researchers is qualified to answer this question, especially regarding yourself or anyone you specifically know. That question can and only will be answered by researchers using human subject committees sometime in the future. Until then, I'm not sure speculation would even be constructive to be honest.

Please remember each human is individually wired. What works for one may or may not work for another . . .

I would love it if you could take some time to tell us a bit more about yourself via an introductory essay.

Again, welcome to the Nexus.

..as Pandora says no one here or the medical world (of which there's a few here) could answer that at this stage..so little real research has been done on DMT and other potentially therapeutic compounds due to the scare of the 60s and prohibition of Science!

i could ask, though: have any of these unfortunate people tried harmalas (betacarboline MAO inhibiting anti-depressant/relaxant, and also endogenous to the human brain) or simply cannabis ? (though i know the latter can actually cause insomnia in a few!)

if i had a research grant, harmalas is where i'd start..

If I had 6-18 months to live I'd be doing all kinds of things. While everyone is right that this can't be prescribed by anyone I would personally say it wouldn't hurt for the individual with the illness to do his/her own research into the subject and if they feel comfortable to go ahead and try DMT. It is not going to hurt them, this we already know. It has been suggested and tested with the use of DMT and cancer patients in giving them some kind of comfort with the idea of death. It has certainly made me more comfortable with the idea of dying. So with that in mind, let the people do their own research and go ahead with whatever they feel comfortable with. If I had 6-18 months to live, I would take DMT with the intent of preparing for death. If it somehow allowed them to survive longer than more power to them!

..i don't think DMT, however comforting and spiritual, is going to help Anyone sleep!

i should explain i'm a clinical psych..my intuition, and experience, suggests Harmalas..but that's just my POV

yeah I hadn't heard of this with dmt. I know it has been studied with mushrooms though with very interesting results. Roland Griffiths has done good work in this area

If the OP is talking about Fatal Familial Insomnia then I doubt DMT would help in any significant,or curative way-but this is speculation based on the pathology of the disorder (and I doubt formal studies have been done with tryptamines in this ailment). Its an inherited prion disorder and thus far, no effective treatment has been found for any Prion disorders. A compound called Pentosan was used in sporadic CJD some years ago and was alleged to show promise but nothing firm came of it, IIRC.Personally, Ive seen CJD (Creutzfeld Jakob Disease) but not FFI.

Still, this is no reason to consider all options in this rremarkably tragic ailment.
I am paranoid of my brain. It thinks all the time, even when I'm asleep. My thoughts assail me. Murderous lechers they are. Thought is the assassin of thought. Like a man stabbing himself with one hand while the other hand tries to stop the blade. Like an explosion that destroys the detonator. I am paranoid of my brain. It makes me unsettled and ill at ease. Makes me chase my tail, freezes my eyes and shuts me down. Watches me. Eats my head. It destroys me.
