Another war that´s slowly coming to an end. Who would have believed ten years ago, when W was still running the show, that in 2012 there would be legal (recreational) cannabis in america?

An historic day. The rest of the world will surely take notice too.

The only downside is that it took so long, but things are moving forward. About time!
This is the time to really find out who you are and enjoy every moment you have. Take advantage of it.

Colorado and Washington both passed for legalization. Massachusetts joined the Medical Marijuana team and also has some non-binding questions going to 200,000 voters asking opinions on full legalization, etc.

In Colorado and Washington it will be legalized officially within about a month, but the first storefronts won't open until January 2014.

Oregon did not approve legalization (45 yes, 55 no), but news reports sound optimistic about future progress as full legalization received more yes votes than a previous year's Medical Marijuana proposal.

Arkansas and Montana did not approve Medical Marijuana.

I understood from Ice House that a certain group of people would be pardoned. So what is the actual status on this?

I just smoked my first celebration bowl!

Well I know for at least parts of Washington, maybe even most of it, they don't send people to jail for weed unless it was trafficking. I think maybe it will be a case by case basis on amnesty/pardons. The people trafficking large amounts broke the law in a big way, and the law regarding that hasn't changed much.

It will surely be interesting to see how it all works out. I think with the rising poll numbers it's only a matter of time. If you look at this poll, it's very clear where the general trend is heading.

As for how Obama has handled the medical thing in California, it bothers me a lot. I didn't know the last dispensary shut down. Here in Washington there's been a bit of a shake up, but that was at the state level because the dispensaries weren't following the laws about where they had their stores. I think the state handled it in the hopes that the federal government wouldn't. The whole mess in cali makes me wary about Obama. He painted himself as a reformer, outsider, non-politician like candidate in 2008. He even said he'd stop pursuing marijuana. The whole thing just tells me that he is your average politician, and I have lost a lot of trust over it. I hope now that he doesn't have to worry about re-election he'll do the right thing.... and let me smokah de gange!!

I will anyway.Twisted Evil

These are GREAT steps in the right direction, but until we legalize Cannabis at the Federal level it does little to keep the DEA and other organizations from harassing and arresting people and seizing their property. We need change at the Federal level and we need it quickly. Science is backing up the fact that many of these substances we talk about on this site are in fact medicinal. Support any legislation that advocates for an end to prohibition of Cannabis at the Federal level. We are pretty damn close right now, we just need to demand it to happen.
Let us declare nature to be legitimate. All plants should be declared legal, and all animals for that matter. The notion of illegal plants and animals is obnoxious and ridiculous.

I haven't seen any mention of individuals with past marijuana offenses in the text for either Colorado or Washinton. It is my understanding that they still broke the law, as it was at the time of the crime, so the convictions would stand. Unless I overlooked something.

I remember when I was a teen lad in 1974 that the movement was underway to decriminilaze marijuana in California. On January 1, 1975, Senate Bill 95[13] made possession under one ounce of cannabis for non-medical use punishable by a $100 fine. That was a happy day considering that one could be charged with a felony back then with the previous laws from my recollection.

The movement on this is really slow. The alcohol lobby has a lot to do with it as do all of the moralists trying to prevent the corruption of 'young minds'. What a load of malarkey!

Albeit late, these two states are paving the way for other states to enact such laws. Ultimately this will pressure the Feds to repeal the stupid laws putting canibis into the schedule 1 category for drugs.

I hope that I see this happen before I die. Progress is slow, but I hope it is building momentum. The war on drugs has been a terrible waste of money, time, and resources that would have been better spent solving the issues in society that tend to drive people towards addictions. If only the same resources were put into convicting the gambler investor criminals in the banking industry that keep causing financial bubbles and robbing the people wortking to make a living.
