So i laid my eyes on a thread here not to long ago about the idea of using B. Cappi in a kombucha tea.

WELL i am going to actually try it and post results/pictures.

I'll be doing a .5 gallon batch with using 9g fresh/dried B. Cappi leaves, .5 cup of cane sugar (unbleached), and filtered water.

There is this whole tyramine issue with this sort of process, but i'm honestly not to worried about it. B. Cappi is much milder than say syrian rue. Thoughy about using P. Incarnata foliage, but decided not too (wouldn't want that kind of flavor profile).

My last Sencha Green tea batch spawned a beautiful new/white scoby ill be using for this process.

So rest assured now we can all know what it is like, using B. Cappi tea instead of green/black/oolong and whatever you might use.

-Ill be posting of the ingredients used, and the final product. I'll let it run loose for about 6-9 days.

Awesome! I'm excited to see this happening.

I'd like to start my kombucha going again. I have cappi leaves too, but have yet to even try tea from them...

Yeah, you know i have never had just plain old cappi tea. Ive done P. Incarnata foliage tea (which i really like, but not the flavor so much).

Ive thought about doing this for a while, i tried a syrian rue extract/kombucha but it taste so bad i just threw it out.

This is a pic of the holding vessel, ill be back to repost in a week or so.

Kombucha is so easy to make, and so great for the body/mind.. Get on it!

Um... Fermented food or brews do not mix well with MAOIs. I've seen many caapi safety diet's that specifically prohibit kombucha as well. Maybe it isn't that dangerous, but with the ethanol in kombucha mixed with caapi you're just gonna get a drink that makes you mad drowsy.

I appreciate the concern. I'm not that worried mainly because of experiences with MAOIs in the past. No one has tried it yet, so ill be the first (to my knowledge).

B. Cappi is light, and the dosing is pretty low. Since there is no caffeine I most likely will try it before bed. But harmalas can be stimulating too. It's only 1.5% of ethanol max, and as you let it sit longer the ethanol turns into acids, which might bring out more of the alkaloids availability.

The WORST that will happen is nothing noticeable, or sleepiness (and i don't mind either).

I just think it would be cool to have the alkaloids possibly transform into different unexplored analogues that would have some kind of mind stimulating effect. That's why I'm trying this.

Do you know the tyramine levels of the kombucha? This is where the MAOI safety diet comes into play. Not to mention:
Quote:
.5 cup of cane sugar
Sugar is a big no-no with aya as well.

Quote:
i have never had just plain old cappi tea

that's ayahuasca my friend, sugar and fermented foods are a big no-no to mix with her.

I'm not saying you shouldn't do this cuz I've never done it myself. But from what I know I wouldn't be doing it. Be safe friend.

Kombucha lives best in a brew of cane juice and Camellia sinensis, using other types of tea as a base will eventually degrade the strength of your culture. Most of the larger kombucha brewers first brew a plain kombucha and then add other herbs/juices/flavors after it has already been brewed the traditional way.

While it usually isn't a problem for the majority of people with RIMA's such as harmala alkaloids, the possibility of negative interactions occurring from mixing maoi's with fermeneted products is there, and one should exercise due caution when experimenting with this combination.

There is not a lot of research into kombucha and most of the health effects attributed to it are anecdotal and not backed up by any real research. There are also some reports of certain people having adverse effects from kombucha.

From Kombucha a lone? or mixed with MAOI?

I was referring to just kombucha alone, and that's just based on the excerpt of the wikipedia article I linked at the bottom of my post.

I do brew and drink kombucha and believe it to have health benefits personally, but the research isn't really there to back it up; thus, I would be hesitant to advise it to others and claim it as good for you.

Would you mix yours with an MAOI? I'm affraid this is dangerous, I don't wanna be too overbearing hardonfordrums but just be careful.

For most people I don't think it would really cause a problem at all, I have drank kombucha before and after ayahuasca on various occasions and not noticed any adverse effects. We are all different however, and it could cause some pretty serious problems for some people; so you really need to tread carefully with this combination.

My only real critique of this recipe is that using caapi leaf instead of Camellia sinensis will effect the integrity of your culture within a couple rounds of brewing. I would brew it the traditional way with the black tea first, then I would mix the caapi tea into the kombucha after it had finished brewing.

Personally, I don't see the benefits of this experiment outweighing the risks and it's not something I intend to try; nor would I recommend others experiment with it.

I'm aware of the risk, and I would not even consider if my body could not handle it. I have many cultures, so i figure i could use one to experiment even if it degrades or what not. I'm willing to experiment with this combination even though some do not agree. After all, there is only one way to find out.

My .5 gallon brew was only boiled on medium heat for 10 mins. It will yield almost 3 16oz glasses of kombucha, meaning ill have slightly more than 3 grams of cappi leaf per glass (that is my typical serving size).

Ayahuasca is a 2 component drink to my knowledge, not just cappi alone.

And yeah there really isn't a whole array of scientific data, but it is assayed to contain alot of organic acids, amino acids, probiotics, and almost all b-vitamins. It has been a tradition in asia since B.C. years. When something that old survives and hits the west you know it's good..

And on the negative health claims, the only negative effects i had from kombucha ever was slight nausea. That was from drinking almost a whole gallon in the course of a day because it was soo damn tasty. But the nausea i can conclude came from an excess release of toxins to the blood stream.

All in all, i have a culture to waste, a knowledge of my bodily limits, a clean diet, and time. So i will be conducting this experiment even if other disagree. This isn't the first time this idea has appeared on the nexus.

I am not advising to others, in any way. I am putting the experiment up, just in case anyone else wonders this.

But again, thanks for the concern. Some people are not as aware of maoi restrictions/limitations. This would shed some light on that too.

"Ayahuasca is a 2 component drink to my knowledge, not just cappi alone."

Ayahuasca IS caapi alone. You're thinking of the admixture with the DMT containing plant.

Let us know how it is. I think you'll be fine if you're only doing 3 grams. But if you look at any ayahuasca safety diet it prohibits sugars and fermented products...

I doubt you'll get any effect though from 3 g caapi leaves. I change my warning about this being about danger, to just simply the fact it might be a waste of product. You need a lot of caapi leaves for a brew to have any effect. Also, more tannins in the leaf may add unnecessary nausea or make it easier to throw up.

Ah, I didn't know that. Then what's the mixture referred to as?

I'll defiantly re-post results, this is a one-time experiment anyhow.

But thanks a lot, safety and sanitation always!

I believe they're also commonly referred to as ayahuasca, but the "original ayahuasca" is cappi alone.

Alrighty, so my b. cappi kombucha is done. Ill post results on how it went/felt after I get home from work. I have abstained from aged/cultured foods other than regular kombucha itself to ensure optimal pre-ingestion safety. It's been almost a month and I'm super stoked to find out if there with be any psychoactive effects at all whatsoever.
