I can't comment on shaman use of mushrooms in today's world, but cyb is correct about past civilizations and mushroom use.

Check out Breaking the Mushroom Code (and also the Soma in the Americas tab) for some great information done into these civilizations.

There are probably still some shaman who take them in the Oaxaca area. Ever heard of Maria Sabina?

there is evidence of psilocybe mushroom cults throughout central america at least at one point.

There is some documentation of amazonian use of one specific tree mushroom that some have speculated is a certain speices of psilocybin mushroom growing on trees that can be found in the area but there is not much info on the subject at all.

There is an old thread about this topic at the ayahuasca forums and it seems like some curranderos there are def aware of the mushrooms and I think someone mentioned one well known currandero who always adds mushrooms to his ayahuasca so people "get it"..but I cannot confirm this..

The thing with mushrooms in the amazon is that they have no way to preserve them..especially in that environment. There may have been knowledge of the mushrooms all along right through central and into south america..but with the presense of ayahuasca that is available all year and the various tryptamine snuffs that can be stored longer term it would make sense that they gravitated towards those plant teachers. The mushrooms are found for a very limited period and break down very quickly in that environment so the period of viable mushroom use would be extremely limited. Take a look at the mazatec use of the mushrooms for instance..the mushroom season is the only time they really work with the mushrooms..whereas ayahuasca and tryptamine snuffs are something that is used all year long in the amazon.
Long live the unwoke.
