So after reading through all the various tek's, my biggest question is about clean-up. This seems to be something quite lacking. The FAQ points to a forum discussion that pretty much just says to flush the basified stuff down the toilet.

That's fine for the bases, but what about the solvents? Keep in mind that some people are on well & septic, and don't want to contaminate their water supply.

I suppose that naphtha isn't too big a deal to let evaporate or burn off, but as some of the extraction teks here (i.e. for cactus extractions) use xylene or toluene, it would be good to have some better information on how to properly and safely clean up after working with these things.

Most googling about these chemicals recommends use of some sort of hazardous waste disposal depot, but I somehow doubt you want to do something so... trackable.

Likewise, I really don't think we should be contaminating city sewage water with these solvents, so there has to be a good alternative.

This brings another question -- how do you properly clean your glassware? These non-polar solvents don't mix with water, so what do you use to wash the glassware, and then how do you dispose of whatever you wash it with?

Thanks Smile

I'm probably not the one to go to for reliable info on this topic, but to my knowledge the hazardous waste disposal depots would be the best bet. Most solvents, to my knowledge, have regular uses that don't scream "I'm extracting DMT" so following the hazardous waste procedures would be the correct way of disposal depending on local regulations.

From my reading it seems that a large number of extractors wash the solvent a few times and save it for future extractions. IMO this would be ideal for a couple of reasons. You can re-use the solvent and avoid having to purchase more or worry about disposal. Also, some product may still be in the solvent and can be extracted later.

Take it with a grain of salt though.

A few relevant topics I pulled up with a search on disposal:
On reusing non polar solvents
(D-Limo / Ethanol)responsible disposal
(Naphtha)Optimal Naphtha disposal
(Lye / Naphtha)Sludge disposal
