I've ditched my Chore Boy copper mesh screens for this:

http://aqualabtechnologies.com/...en-3-4-inch-60-wire.html

The wires are thicker than regular ss screen wires and are so close together that spice clings to the screen and does not drip at all while vaporizing. There are no nooks and crannies for the spice to hide in, so vaporization of your entire dose is simple and easy to verify when you return from hyperspace. If you missed some, you'll see it stuck to the screen.

Being able to see the amount of unvaporized spice would be very helpful to newbies unsure of their technique. Another benefit to newbies is not having to deal with getting the thickness and density of the copper mesh just right. And no more worries about acetone cleaning and torching either.

In addition to looking cleaner, it is functionally cleaner, since no spice makes it to the glass around the edge, where if using a Chore Boy mesh you'd get brownish resin buildup on the glass. The amount of condensation you get in the pipe is the same as that with a copper mesh, but cleaning the pipe is easier.

The only possible downside I can think of is that it's easier to scratch the inside of the pipe when inserting and removing the screen, since titanium is harder than copper, and the screen is pretty rigid. However, since the pipe can be cleaned effectively without removing the screen, I don't think it's really a problem.

If you want to try this, super-simple instructions are below.

Get a 3/4 inch titanium 60-wire screen from Aqua Labs. (Don't be tempted to get the 5/8 inch screen that will fit in the standard location. Been there, done that. It's a royal pain to install and remove because of the screen's rigidity. And unless you place the spice perfectly in the middle, some can make it to the glass around the edges and run/drip down into the pipe.)

Bend edges to approximate a dome shape.

Insert screen to just below the filter top. One titanium screen is all you need, and you can dispose of the standard stainless screen.

No pre-melt is necessary. Just put your spice on the screen, and vape using your standard GVG technique.

The attached pics of screen in pipe were taken 22 hours after vaporizing a 28mg dose. As you can see, I got it all. (I'm a lightweight, my breakthrough dose is 20mg) Smile

PS Thanks to cosmicladybug for asking about these in the main GVG thread. She said she ordered two of the 5/8 inch screens and would report back if successful. She didn't, so I assumed failure back then, but a couple of months went by and I had the occasion to investigate them for something else. Then I tried them with my GVG and had success. After my experience, I'm sure her problem with them was either because she couldn't get them seated in the pipe or because they "leaked" between the edge of the screen and the glass.

Very interesting, would be awesome to remove the guesswork with the copper scrubber. I wont be able to order one of these for a few weeks, but once I can I think I will, hopefully some other people will report back success with this method.

Good information. Thanks for taking the leap. Think I will give them a try as well.

Well of course I’ll have to weigh in. Razz

I’m not convinced that this screen is better at holding liquid than any other fine mesh screen. Titanium is nice, but stainless steel screens are available for the GVG if you don’t like copper.

With both copper ribbon and screens, the forcefulness with which one inhales has a big effect on whether or not liquid drips or is pulled off the material. It’s possible that a very gentle inhalation with a regular pipe screen may be effective. Adequate attention must be paid to inhaling gently, even with copper mesh.

One would have to compare the titanium screen to a regular pipe screen to copper mesh before making any claims.

If one doesn’t like copper there are sources of other kinds of metal ribbon: stainless steel, brass, even gold and platinum.

Well, water will drip right through this screen, no doubt. But spice doesn't.

If you rub your finger on this Ti screen and then rub the standard SS GVG screen, you'll find that the Ti screen feels rough, and the SS screen feels slippery. And the wires are thicker. So wire spacing is not the only variable here.

It seems that the viscosity of the melted spice is enough to keep it clinging to the rough surface/tight weave of this screen.

Or maybe the entities just like me, and are manipulating the spice with this screen just for me. Big grin

Hold in one hand between thumb and forefinger so the edge is poking out. Bend the edge up with thumb and forefinger of other hand, rotate screen and continue to bend until the entire circumference is bent. Then press thumb inside the "basket" and squeeze the perimeter so it becomes more rounded. Match diameter to GVG inner diameter, then insert.

That's what I did. The screen's not so rigid that it needs pliers. But who knows... maybe using pliers would produce a rounder, more exact dome?

Maybe just me who is missing something, but why is the sceen black when the one on the link you sent is grey/silver? Very happy in the last pictures the black one is in the gvg, is that the titanium sceen?

Also would love to see what other people are going to say when they tried this. seems like a hell of a solution. One sceen. cant beat that

The "black" screen on the right is titanium. It's actually a matte gray, but it looks black in the pic. And yes, the screen in the GVG is titanium. Cheap iPhone camera, sorry. Smile

haha, okey that clears up my confusion. Man this is a great discovery if it really is that simple. one screen and nothing melt through.

I'm looking forward to reports from others that should confirm this works for everyone. One thing I should add is that I've only used the screen with 30mg or less, since my breakthrough dose is 20mg. People who vape 50mg or more might need to double up with a 5/8 inch screen on top of the main screen. But maybe not -- I'm just surmising.

I also ordered one and got it last week.

I tried it out last night. Here are some of my observations:

1. The screen is significantly larger than the inner diameter of the GVG chamber, so it has to be carefully formed into a bowl-like shape – almost a hemisphere. I put the screen in the chamber like a right side up bowl. It might work better (less glass contact) if put in like an upside down bowl.

2. I tried only 15mg, and when melted, DMT does cling to it quite well. However, the DMT forms a solid film over the surface with no air gaps. Prior to vaporization, air has to flow around the “blot” of melted DMT. The result seems to be slower vaporization.

3. I always inhale gently and slowly, but my guess is that if one were to inhale too forcefully, the DMT would be pulled/sucked off the screen and would drip.

4. I haven’t noticed any leakage, so I think it is more effective than screens made from polished wire.

Pros:

>> An alternative to copper for those who mistakenly believe that dangerous fumes are produced by heating copper to GVG vaporization temperature.

>> Seems to hold DMT well – but not nearly as well as copper ribbon.

Cons:

>> Expensive when compared to copper ribbon. The screen + postage was over $13. For that amount, one could purchase enough copper ribbon for hundreds of ribbon discs.

>> Vaporization seems slower. Maybe this is due to the restriction of airflow around the film of liquid DMT? Even with a small dose of 15mg, vaporization seemed to take noticeably longer than it does with 25mg on a copper ribbon disc.

>> Getting the screen to just the right shape to fit in the GVG is tedious. In the time it took to shape the screen, I could have made 3 or 4 copper ribbon discs.

>> Limit to how much DMT it can effectively hold. 15mg when melted spread out over maybe 1/3 of the surface. A large dose of 40-50mg (larger than I’d ever need) might drip off. A copper ribbon disc can easily hold 100mg + without dripping.

>> Technique is very important. If someone who hasn’t perfected a gentle, slow inhalation technique tries it, they might easily pull the liquid DMT off the screen.

I wonder if this is an alloy of titanium.

Apparently titanium (unalloyed) has a thermal conductivity upto 20% greater than that of stainless steel, but still less than that of copper.
