Jim Morrison was definitely doin' thangs.
And people that are doin' thangs are usually shamans.

..there's an interview with Jim (now removed in full from youtube) in which he is asked what he thinks about shamanism and he says he doesn't really know a lot about it..the only bit i can find of this interview is where he (accurately) predicts the future of music..jim on the future of music - 1969

..then there's this very informative interview with Ray Manzarek in which he, amongst other things, slams Oliver Stone's depiction of Jim in the Doors movie..Ray maintains firmly that Jim WAS NOT A DRUNK..did not and could not have recorded albums like L.A. Woman on the bottle (despite the tales by people who didn't know him)
..he says Jim was a very sensitive poet type..

Pissing on people is not very gentleman-like indeed.

On the other hand, if you´d realise how many people have pissed or puked on his grave in pere lachaise by now, i think it´s fair to say that the world got even with him.

that doors movie was a pile of crap. Read his biography and throw that movie in the garbage.

The word shaman is completely overused, misunderstood and watered down in modern society. I would'n't call a musician and a poet a shaman because he is great. He did not heal people, he did not study shamanism, he wrote songs and poems and took psychedelics. If that's a shaman then there are thousands of shamans here on the nexus.

I like the doors and J.M. but feel is is overly revered often probably because he died tragically a young man.

He appeared to me in the form of a lizard once. Just as one might expect.

A shaman is someone who basically envokes/invokes/talks with spirits and performs rituals, altered states of conciousness, someone with knowledge/knowing of the other side/behind the viel, docters/sorcerers etc..it goes on...

Jim always had a facination with spirits/religion/shamanism/occult knowledge since he was a kid.
During his late teens/early twentys, he would spend days in occult book stores reading about demonology and shamanism, his head was full of that stuff, his bedroom would be a minature library of books on dionysus, pagan dietys, American Indian tribes etc...

All this stuff obviously lead him to taking entheogens such as peyote...i wounder what his intentions were going in, with all the shaman type of knowledge he was consuming?
He would smoke a fist sized bag of weed everyday, during the days he was doing lsd, which he apparently did over 250 times, still all the while reading about the occult and wanting to become a rockstar.

Anyway he said he met a spirit of music on some rooftop near a beach he was living on. Since then with "syncronicity" and "coincidences" his dream of being a rockstar became vey quickly true.

He was still fascinated with the occult and began to say he had demons/devils/spirits in his head to his friends/entourage etc...He later became a lover of patricia kennealy, who was basically a witch/pagan girl who dabbled in the occult, they would drink each others blood and stuff.

Jim wasnt a drunk by choice, he drank to numb the spirits in his head, he use to write poems about them, he would call them the lords...he generally believed they are in control of the world at the moment, they were in his head, they helped him become a rockstar, and since then he was battling them inside himself. Drinking numbs your fear and anxiety and jim went through a lot of that, he knew he was on a one way road, once you start opening doors in your head, you cant really close them.

"The Lords. Events take place beyond our knowledge or control. Our lives are lived for us. We can only try to enslave others. But gradually, special perceptions are being developed. The idea of the "Lords" is beginning to form in some minds. We should enlist them into bands of perceivers to tour the labyrinth during their mysterious nocturnal appearances. His head was a open door for spirits to come and go. He pushed himself to the limit of his sanity. In my opinion he followed the shaman path and without training he became lost and his mind vunerable.

Entheogens are not the only way to contact spirits and have altered states, you can work with the occult, such as books, some of aleister crowley's.
For those of you who think the occult is bull, then to you it will be. Most people think dmt is bull till they force it down their lungs, its the same with the occult, a open mind and you will find, knock and the door will open.

Jim mest around with the occult and shamanism and back in the day those two went hand in hand like peas in a pod, and really they still do today.

Jims not alone in what he done, hendrix went through similar circumstances with being born into a voodoo environment as a child, apparently he wrote a song about it.

Some drink to remember, some drink to forget.

..if he'd lived to 30..40..50..and was still drinking, then he could probably be called a drunk..but really, even i got drunk in my early-20s (now i'm totally anti-booze)
..he was still a young man finding his way..and sensitive to peer-group pressure, as the young are..e.g. the dubious crew who got Jimi Hendrix into drink and pills, or the people Syd Barret went out with partying for a weekend and 'never came back'..
