So I have a friend who I would like to introduce to the cactus brew. This friend is also a diabetic. I've always been taught and read that fasting is a fairly important part of the experience in dealing with this medicine, but I don't feel reasonable suggesting this to my friend, since it could be dangerous to his body.

How important is this fasting? I've always observed at least a partial fast before ingesting cactus, and have heard theories about how low blood sugar can actually kinda synergize with the experience.

I understand that one of the important functions of fasting (aside from empty stomach, low blood sugar) is that it is a way of making your intention into something tangible. It is the willingness to give something up (and even maybe suffer a bit) for the sake of the healing and experience. I think meditation and perhaps other dietary restrictions could be a useful way of doing this for a person who's body can't tolerate fasting.

From my personal experience, I feel like ingesting cactus actually helps my body regulate blood sugar fluctuations better than I would otherwise be able to. I can feel super low blood sugar, low energy from fasting, and once it kicks in, that all seems to go away. I wonder about the healing potential of this medicine for someone who suffers from diabetes. Also it is interesting that his diabetes seems to have kicked in after his divorce, so it potentially has a mental link (as I think almost all illnesses do), and it seems to me this type of medicine can be VERY useful in dealing with illnesses brought on by mental and spiritual issues.

Just curious of other peoples' takes on this- I'm not sure how many of yall are interested in the genuine healing potentials of this medicine.

A fasting alternative?

Sure. Juice fast. Or just eat raw fruit. He'll be fine.

It's not a big deal - unless monster doses are being considered.

As someone suggested , a juice fast would do.

I just avoid big meals night before and anytime before the event to limit bloated feelings/nausea.

actually find a simple small meal (e.g bowl of oats) say 1 -2 hours before helpful to carry me through the long event.

Energy that does not get utilized quickly, or maintaining a low level of easily/quickly used energy is the way i deal with this.

For me that means complex carbs/protein 4-6 hours before ingestion, and fruit/simple carbs later in the experience. I don't fast overnight before tripping, i can usually only go about 6 hours max until i have to eat, but my metabolism is very fast, and my blood sugar can be volatile at times.

That means a medium/big meal that provides lasting energy no less than 4 hours before ingestion, something i couldn't/wouldn't want to do right before ingestion for obvious reasons, and then waiting at least a few hours after ingestion before snacking on short lived carb's, usually fruit of some sort as i start to feel drained.

In a society in which nearly everybody is dominated by somebody else's mind or by a disembodied mind, it becomes increasingly difficult to learn the truth about the activities of governments and corporations, about the quality or value of products, or about the health of one's own place and economy.
In such a society, also, our private economies will depend less upon the private ownership of real, usable property, and more upon property that is institutional and abstract, beyond individual control, such as money, insurance policies, certificates of deposit, stocks, etc. And as our private economies become more abstract, the mutual, free helps and pleasures of family and community life will be supplanted by a kind of displaced citizenship and by commerce with impersonal and self-interested suppliers...
The great enemy of freedom is the alignment of political power with wealth. This alignment destroys the commonwealth - that is, the natural wealth of localities and the local economies of household, neighborhood, and community - and so destroys democracy, of which the commonwealth is the foundation and practical means.” - Wendell Berry

Thanks for the ideas guys. Do you find that if you don't fast, you need to take a larger dose than if you do?

i find that without a fast i am unable to achieve the depths i normally experience with my standards of dosing, this is true for me with both achuma and mescaline salts

i find that if i eat during the experience it is diminished readily

for your friend, i would address his hypoglycemia (he has low blood sugar issues right, not a lack of insulin?) with other medicines first, perhaps aya. or he can slowly climb his way to better health by ingesting only enough juice to sustain his blood sugar before the medicine while still avoiding solids. each experience he might try total calorie free fasting for longer if there is room for improvement with his diabetic issue. so maybe he goes 2 hours without sugar this time and 3 hours next time, that idea. however the lack of solid food is paramount.

he might also try a sauna/sweat + meditation to supplement his intent as a full fast seems improbable

Just shows how different we all from each other and how we all react differently in these situations...

obviously we are all individuals.

Cool isn't it!
