I’ve decided to leave my job at a pharmacy due to moral issues I have with it. I have two days left. My boss is the on the verge of being fired due to multiple complaints he has received from fellow employees. I’ve heard though the grape vine that if he gets anymore negative feedback he will be let go. I know how these other employees feel as I too have been victimized. I have written a letter posted in quotes below that I tentatively intend to send to the company in regards to my boss. I need to get some objective feedback from the community as this is a very emotionally driven decision for me. Should I send this letter which will probably get my boss fired or not? Quote: My name is ******** ******* and I’m a pharmacy technician who has recently left ***** store number ****. This letter is in regards to (boss)** my now former pharmacy manager. I want to bring attention to the various incidents, attitudes, and prejudices I have been witness to over my time working for (boss)**. He is unprofessional, demeaning, manipulatively fear mongering, and underhandedly power seeking. These are qualities that have been conducive to low staff morale and the recent influx in resignations.
In no particular order:
• Mid July we were short staffed. We staffed one of the cashiers from up front to work as a clerk in an attempt resolve this issue. Her duties included checking people out and racking finished prescriptions. Unbeknownst to her, when we hang prescriptions, we put them in exact alphabetical order. (boss)** found out she was doing it incorrectly and the next day while he wasn’t working, he called the pharmacy to speak with her about it. According to her, his words were: “Look, if you can’t figure out how to hang the bags in alphabetical order that’s not my problem. It will be easy to replace you.” Keep in mind that this girl was doing us a favor and was unaware of proper procedure.
• (boss)** is racist against African Americans. During a discussion about death rate, (boss)** stated “Black people don’t live as long because they are dirtier than us”. He has also commented at one point “I’m not racist but, in this area we get a lot of ignorance because black people aren’t educated”. These are just two of the most recent comments I can recall off the top of my head, albeit there have been many others over the course of time.
• Two weeks after starting in the pharmacy a customer asked me where the q-tips were located. I didn’t know, so I asked (boss)**. Right in front of the customer (boss)** proceeded to hatefully scold me for being so foolish.
• I requested a day off 6 months in advance for a family gathering. One week before the day I needed off, I mentioned it to (boss)** to ensure that everything was copasetic. He was unhappy about it, but I told him I still needed off. A week later he hands out the new schedules and puts me on to work that day. I tell him I still need off and he proceeds to call me an inconsiderate jerk in front of staff members. He continues on in a fit of rage, sarcastically telling another employee in front of everyone “Well, it looks like (me)*** isn’t going to be any help to us and you’re going to have to work all day because of him”. After this event took place, any time he needed me to do something he would childishly tell another staff member to tell me to do it instead of asking me directly. He continued on in this manner of indirectly talking to me for the rest of the day. After all this, he then again scheduled me to work the same day.
• (boss)** is very hateful of certain other employees and freely discusses work related conflicts involving these people that he should respectfully be keep confidential. I have been witness to this countless times, but the most recent situations that come to mind involve (another employee)*** and (another employee)***. I can tell you anything you want to know about the conflict involving the hiring situation with (another employee)*** or the issues with (another employee)*** due to (boss)** gossip. Confidentiality in the workplace does not exist.
• (boss)** will tell you to do a task in a very specific manner and then at some point in the future tell you to do it in another way. Depending on his mood in a given day he might want you to do a given task any number of ways and then will yell at you for not doing it the way he asked. It’s very confusing and becomes a limiting factor for efficiency.
• (boss)** is passive aggressive. If you are on (boss)** bad side or do something to upset him he will get his vengeance by procuring a task that falls within the scope of your job description, but would not be considered a normal duty. For example, one employee put away a mini-heater on the back counter. (boss)** was not happy with this and scolded this employee for this “error”. (boss)** then made this person organize and clean the entire back counter. There is nothing wrong with keeping a tidy workplace but it’s the intention behind the order that creates a hostile environment. A similar situation resulted in another employee having to clean out the ceiling vent shortly after upsetting (boss)**.
• (boss)** went on vacation to Europe recently for a few weeks and I found myself performing better; more accurate, faster, and with a smoother general flow then I have experienced prior to that time. At first I thought this was just the time I put in catching up to me. I didn’t think much of it until he returned. Upon return my sub-optimal productivity level again surfaced. Take note that half the time I was working with a pharmacist who doesn’t frequent store number **** and my performance was still better than when working with (boss)**.
• (boss)** is prejudice against homosexuals. There used to be a gentleman who worked in the floral department who was openly homosexual. One day he came over to the pharmacy to get a prescription filled for some antibiotics as he was very ill. Another technician was assisting him and after he left the technician mentioned to (boss)** that “I hope this prescription helps him because he really doesn’t look very good”. (boss)** responded with “I wouldn’t know. I refuse to look at someone like him directly in the eye”.
• We have another customer who is also openly homosexual. He regularly gets a prescription filled for a medication to make his eye lashes longer and his insurance helps to pay for it. (boss)** does not like that this gentleman fills with us and has deliberately re-priced the prescription higher than the co-pay dictated from the insurance in an attempt to run this customer off.
I have never felt the need to write a letter of this nature until now. I enjoyed working for ****** but unfortunately (boss)** carries with him a ubiquitously hateful and hostile attitude that ultimately dictated my decision to leave the company. Working with (boss)** is like walking on egg shells and trying not to break them. I should also mention that (boss)** spoke with me about how I was going to have a resignation interview. In his words: “I would appreciate if you didn’t say anything bad because it doesn’t look good that so many people are leaving at the same time. Just put in a good word for me.” I also learned that he had a similar conversation with another person who has recently left the pharmacy.
Lastly, I ask that this letter remain confidential mainly out of fear. I’m not sure what (boss)** Is capable of and if there were to be any repercussions as a result of this letter I would not want to be the one to blame. If you have any questions feel free to contact me at ******************.

As has been said in the chat: that's a very nicely worded dossier. I would send it as nobody deserves to be treated like this by their direct supervisor. The spice extends life. The spice expands consciousness. The spice is vital to space travel.

Your letter is a good one. It is a well kept dossier of issues that are really not done in a professional environment. You should send the letter to prevent any new employees to get the same treatment. If this person never feels the consequences of his actions then this will go on forever. Kind regards, The Traveler

I wish I could find a job where I didn't have to put up with bs like this. You haven't really got anything to lose as I can see if your leaving, maybe your coworkers will be inquired of to speak on behalf of your statement and stand up for their selves as well. Toadfreak!

Exposing injustice, hatred and bigotry for what it a good idea, especially if you even have a chance to help save someone from all that crap. You have a well written letter there. Send it with a smile. I say send it, too. That's not a professional attitude and there's no need for such things in a working environment. Trav said it well: if one does not feel the consequences of their own actions, they'll never change their behavior. The truth...lies within.

Send it. Your boss is grossly incompetent and should not be in the position he is in.

Sure worth a try, and speak to police and check out where to turn and what your options are. Mail a lawer for advice on your situation and what you can do.

If you're pursuing legal action, it would be a lawyer that you speak to and not the police. There may be free legal services available if you are unable to afford a lawyer - perhaps try calling your city's bar association.
