Hello,

I have been having problems with an acacia acuminata plant which seemed to be doing well, but now seems to be struggling somehow. I basically repotted a seedling which had outgrown an old pot into a 200 litre barrel, which is free draining, and I have used a free draining potting mix with no fertilisers. I am aware of intolerance to phosphorus, and I havent added any fertilisers since its been repotted. Throughout spring to the next autumn/fall it flourished in the new barrel with no evidence of problems with the transplant. It is at about 70 cm tall. Now in late winter half of the phyllodes on the plant have seem to turn brownish and drying up, which is indicative of a plant which I had earlier in a seedling stage which perished in summer, but that was understandable as it does get quite hot. This time around though it has had good watering at correct intervals, so please help me as this does seem to not make much sense as to why the plant is having difficulty/dying, considering I have done everything that I can think of to ensure that this plant is happy? Also, I have kept it in the sunniest position possible for this time of year.

..suggest re-pot..thoroughly wash roots..check for fungus/mycelium (white cobwebs) in potting mix/roots (this can cause the leaf-browning and eventual death..change potting mix..use 70-80% river sand plus peat/cocoa moss..
avoid typical commercial potting mix which is heavily wood-chip based..
use slow release nitrogen based fertilizer (for natives)
