http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5lrwYPhHThc Beat me to it. Animals As Leaders is AMAZING, even if you don't usually listen to metal. If you've never heard it, definitely check it out.
I say no to metal on DMT. However, LSD and hyper technical music is always a very appealing combination to me. Usually. I saw Chick Koreal's Electrik Band once while I was tripping and it was shockingly boring and annoying. Keep in mind that a piece of lint from my pocket could hold my interest for hours while on LSD.
I haven't taken LSD in 20 years, but I'll bet Animals As Leaders would be a good choice for an acid trip. Technical and exotic. Hyper-kinetic and intelligent. Those elements combined with the personal knowledge that Tosin Abassi is a nice and very humble guy. He used to work at a music store in my state and he was always such a great guy. Before I ever heard him play, I was in Atomic Music trying out an amp and somebody asked me what kind of music I played. Tosin piped up "that dude can play anything".
That just shows how humble he is. Compared to him, technically, I suck, yet he found value in my playing. When I eventually heard him play I was amazed that he was impressed by my playing.
It's rare to come across stunningly adept players who aren't full of themselves, especially in the field of metal. the un-full-of-shitness really comes through in Animals As Leaders. A lot of technical stuff loses it's soul. Not these guys. Their music is alive and feels organic in a genre not known for that quality. Very psychedelic too. In the sense that it presents as music that is seemingly impossible and it shines with a kind of ecstatic energy.
Speaking of guitar players who are full of themselves, I knew the guitar player for a band charmingly called Dying Fetus, and he referred to himself as a guitar god and regularly talked about how everyone else sucked. Not a very nice person and although his music is impressive, it's definitely not the kind of metal I'd want to hear while tripping.
I understand that some metal is appealing for it's ugliness (see Wormed), but I'm not sure I'd like that mixed with psychedelics.
Some really interesting and strange metal that might work well with psychedelics is by a band called Virus. Their 2011 release The Agent That Shapes the Desert, is really worth checking out. It is fairly avant garde, but still accessible. Really interesting approach with harmonic structures unheard of in metal. Really odd stuff.
Sorry for my rambling. Must be something I inhaled.
