Namaste!

After several failed attempts to hold down jurema tea (purging always occured within 20 minutes of ingestion, and never felt any effects d/t incomplete absorption of actives), I learned of a method of removing nausea-producing tannins from jurema tea with gelatine. I looked through several pages in the ayahuasca section and didn't really see any explanation of this technique; I am surprised it is not recommended as a standard step in jurema prep. I know that it gets the occasional mention but here is a write-up of this extremely simple procedure that I now use with all jurema brew:

1. Prepare jurema via preferred method. I like powdered or finely shredded purple/pink MHRB lightly simmered in water/splash of vinegar for 30 min x 3. The wire mesh permanent coffee filters make filtration of even the finest powder fairly effective.

2. After the final filtration, while the jurema is still piping hot, dissolve 7g of gelatin per 20g of MHRB into a cup of hot water (plain water, not jurema). Stir quickly until the gelatin is dissolved.

3. Quickly stir this gelatin mixture into the jurema. You should notice the jurema turn from deep purple/red to a light opaque pink as the gelatin binds to nasty tannins in the jurema. One needs only to stir for 60 seconds or so to allow maximum efficacy of the gelatin magic.

4. Most of the gelatin will clump together and form a huge ball of tannin/gelatin/sediment nastyness. Scoop out as much of this as you can, then filter the jurema. NOTE: hold back as much of the remaining gelatin particles as you can while the jurema enters the filter, since the filter will clog pretty fast once you run the gelatin over it. If you are using a wire mesh coffee filter, cleaning the gelatin out effectively will probably required a few hot water/soap soaks after you are done.

That is it for the gelatin tek. I recommend letting the brew cool in the fridge for a few days so that fine sediment will fall to the bottom, then decant and filter again. I do this 3 times, letting the brew settle for 3 days each time. The resulting brew ends up a light translucent pink, with very little sediment falling out of suspension after this. The jurema can now be reduced to a palatable quantity, I shoot for 3 fluid ounces per dose, as this can be easily swallowed in one go, but is not so concentrated that the bitterness lingers on the tongue for an excessive amount of time.

I like to throw 2g of ginger per dose of jurema into the pot while brewing, and also into the harmala brews that I make. Ginger combined with the gelatin tek has produced some very smooth tea; no nausea present at all. Bummer for the la purga purists, happy joy for the rest of us.

Is this reducing potency?

well, I used this procedure twice, once was a moderate success and the other was a fiasco.

The first go round I first put only half an ounce of gelatin in (half of what I was needing), and it turned the jurema a very salmony color. With the second half ounce there was a dramatic shift, with the dark red gela-tannin falling to the bottom, leaving a much clearer, milder jurema tea. Taste was even somewhat palatable, I put in too much lemon for it to be good though. I throw in ginger, usually, and this helped taste and along with the reduced tannins and particulates nausea was reduced probably 85% from usual.

The second time was different. After half of my gelatin, the jurema was salmon again. Only this time, no more would go in. It would just clump to itself like the brew was supersaturated with the stuff. I couldn't remedy the situation, so I got out as much of it as I could (there was some pulling of tannin) and just drank the salmon jurema-gel. It was about the same as drinking warm jell-o, jurema flavored. I held the stuff maybe 20 minutes before purging, just enough to get a maybe a fifth of the total DMT. It was the most mild jurema experience I've ever had, and it was just fine. It would have been better if that's what I had been shooting for, but there was something there for me.

Namaste,

Would pectine ( plant source geltine substitute ) work? I am vegan...

Thanks!

Did a google search and found this nexus link:

I was actually wondering this a few days ago, as I made a fairly tannin-y brew recently for the rainbow gathering and was thinking about doing some vegan tannin-removal... it's nice and settled though so the tannins aren't too bad but this is still good info for me.

In that post, rawmo shows research that pectin doesn't have much pectin-binding potential, but cellulose and hemicellulose do. As well as apparently spit? Neutral

Thanks for getting me to look that up!
