I'm new to the whole hallucinogen world. Smoked DMT for the first time last week and it was the first experience I've had with drugs other than marijuana.

I'm really curious as to what everyone here thinks of hallucinogens being dangerous and causing prolonged or even chronic psychological effects?

I'd realy appreciate hearing the good along with the bad. I know the good part more or less is "infinite possibility" but I know anybody who actually journeys with hallucinogens usually have nothing but good things to say.

Presuming you extracted your own, there should be nothing physically dangerous. You mention psychological. If someone already has problems/issues or is prone to heading in that direction, I believe psychedelics can sometimes delay or accelerate the process. If someone is already on the path to self-fulfillment/actualizement, on their way to artistic and other development, that psychedelics can sometimes accelerate or delay the process.

Needless to say, when looking at the psychological, integration time is very important, be it one hour or 20 years . . . .

Seems to me they are mainly a catalyst or lubricant for material that is already within us. . . . .

Saying they're completely safe or completely dangerous isn't the way to go, it really depends on the person who uses the substances, doses, set&setting etc. etc.

I believe that the only danger consists in the mind of the user.
If you are unstable,VERY depressed suicidal.Than that might reflect when you take hallucinogens.
Or even worst it may "unlock" some locked, or hidden things which you don't know how to handle.

But this is not a common occurrence.

"The answer is: yes, it's tremendously dangerous; the danger is the possibility of death by astonishment. And you must prepare yourself for this eventuality, because you are so amazed. Amazement seems to be the emotion that has torn loose and swamped everything else - I mean astounded? When was the last time you were genuinely 'ASTOUNDED'? I mean, I think you can go your whole damned life without being 'ASTOUNDED'... and this is astonishment, you know, raised to the N-th degree to the point that your jaw hangs..."

I think most psychedelics can kind of compare to Jaywalking in danger.

If you look both ways, don't be too risky, and make sure there are no cops around you are probably going to be fine. And what's more it might help you get where you want to go more efficiently Smile.

Then again if you just dart into the street without looking, who knows if you'll get hit by a truck?

The only negative effect I've experienced was as a result of using DMT too often. I had been smoking it every other day or so for a week or two (I wasn't really counting at that time) and it kind of left me hanging out in the 4th dimension for a couple weeks. Time seemed slower, the days felt looooooong. I had a hard time focusing on conversations as my introspection was in full-gear as well. Looking back I suppose it had some lingering visuals, but at the time the world just looked slightly different. It wasn't necessarily bad.... but yeah it was bad. I felt like I was 'almost' down from a DMT trip for 2 weeks.

You may be different but I would suggest simply limiting your use if you notice anything negative. A single experience shouldn't have much of a negative effect, but as everyone has mentioned it certainly depends on YOU.

The McKenna quote on being astonished is great, the whole video is on youtube with video(!) and audio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVXvLLOaI7Q).

Edit: I'd also like to add that taking time to slow your breathing and basically enter a set/setting of distraction-free comfort will help tremendously. A first breakthrough on DMT can have a bit of fear attached as your senses and body are left behind, but brave through it and all will be well.

If you will be enjoying an Aya brew or Changa blend take care to read up on the medical cautions for MAOIs.

Enjoy the show.
The inner soul is full of joy. Reveal my secrets and sew me whole. With each day, "I" heeds your call.
You may not care the slightest and may not be the brightest, but from here "I" sees you're mighty for you created it all.

And the jumbling sea rose above the wall.

Through this chaos comes the order you enthrall.

"In the early 17th century the Pope refused to look through a devise invented by a Known alchemist, Galileo's Telescope.\

Galileo was put under house arrest for confirming that the earth revolved around the sun, and that the earth was not the Center of the universe.

Reality has been Tracked down now to the inner space in us all, where for some mystics it is the new brain science that is the telescope of the day, through which they refuse to peek."
