I listen to a lot of music. I like music from lots of genres. I love lots of standard stuff and even some things that a lot of people would consider embarrassing, like The Carpenters. Some of the stuff I like is pretty bizarre.
I thought it would be nice to have a thread for oddball and strange music. No particular criteria. Everything from The Residents to The Shaggs to James Ferraro to Jandek and beyond. From Fluxus to Zeuhl to The free Design.
Whatever strikes you as bizarre or strange. I'll start.

Oh no! I didn't know he had died.Sad

I met Hans Reichel back in the 80's. I was in this crap "band" and we ended up opening for Fred Frith and Hans Reichel. We had friends at the venue. Hans let me touch one of his stringed instruments and I played a couple notes on it. I was there to see Frith and had never heard of Reichel. I was blown away by his instruments and improvisational style. His music was so funny and kinetic. A true original.

No. Not "that" Bobby Brown. An ENTIRELY different one. Highly recommended for fans oflate 60's / early 70's brain fried psychedelic music. From the album: Enlightening Beam Of Axonda.

Patton Solo Spot (Moonchild) - 03.12.06 - Milano, Italy

I respect His courage and talent, but the first time I saw this I couldn't stop laughing.

Mike Patton has been my musical idol since I was like 13... Definitely one of the busiest men in music and does his own thing, no matter what.

Convert a melodic element into a rhythmic element...

Mike Patton is underrated. He's done so much Tomohawk really rocks, but he's done some really strange stuff. Some of his solo records are really bizarre. I remember when I first heard Mr. Bungle, I was sure that John Zorn was involved. It was like a pop version of Naked City. I was wrong, but there was a definite influence there. Mister Bungle and Tomohawk are like top 40 music compared to some of Patton's solo stuff.
I got to meet him once and he was a really nice guy. The woman I was dating at the time was best friends with Roddy Bottum's sister Elizabeth (who is a really interesting visual artist). I was backstage in hopes of meeting Paige Hamilton from Helmet, but ended up talking to Patton instead. I wasn't much of a Faith No More fan, but came to really appreciate them later. I think that Mike Patton is just getting started. I think his genius has been in the process of blooming for the last 2 decades. You never know what he's going to do next.

This sounds familiar for some reason.

More music from Ralph Records classic era. The mix of this song is very different from the one on the album. I highly recommend this album (Claro Que Si by Yello) for accompaniment to an acid trip.

Some very strange music that was very mainstream at one point. Another one that combines well with LSD. This is some of my favorite stuff. I have a huge collection of these "hi-fi" lp's/ When stereo was new they used some very un-subtle panning techniques. They would also break melodies up and play them across the orchestra in a very fractured, almost pointillist manner. Esquivel is pretty strange. I also love Enoch Light, especially the Provocative Percussion albums and of course his elevator music style* covers of Beatles songs. To some they may be an abomination, but I find them to be very psychedelic and really weird.

* actually the one I posted is more of a psychedelic exploitation track. Still cool though. Or maybe, groove would be a more apt adjective.

I like your style, my man. I've been a big Esquivel fan for many years.

Are you hip to the Capitol Records Ultra Lounge series? I'm particularly partial to the Spacecapades and Bachelor Pad Royale editions.

Yeah. I love some of the early Coil stuff. The first time I heard them was on a Some Bizarre compilation, If You Can't Please Yourself, You can't Please Your Soul. It's a great comp. Einsturzende Neubauten, Foetus, Caberet Voltaire, The The, Psychic T.V., Test Department and some others. The song was The Wheel. Great stuff.

Thank you Art. I have most of those Ultra Lounge series discs. Great packaging. Good compilations. Have you heard the The History of Space Age Pop series on RCA? Another good series.

I collect a lot of the vinyl and am a proud owner of several lp's. They fell into my lap. A lot of that stuff is east (too easy) to find. It was clogging every thrift store in the u.s. before the release of the Esquivel - Space Age Bachelor Pad Music cd in the early 90's. The Esquivel stuff has always been hard for me to find. When I found those Esquivel records (mint) I nearly pooped in my pnts.
The RCA Stereo Action records had some really out there stuff on them. Dick Schory and Leo Addeo especially.

Good to meet another person who likes that stuff.
