As far as I know lot of groundbreaking work was done by the scientists and psychonauts who contributed to the articles in the journal Entheogen Review which was around 1992 to 2008. You can see a progression in there from DMT is unattainable to speculation on various plants to the editor saying he couldn't pull anything decent with nahptha to a change of editors to 2006 where Noman published "DMT for the Masses."
