so... I have taken rue many times by itself and have had pleasant moments. I am curious if its the harmalas that are creating this or if I already have some indigenous chemicals that I feel more so because the rue is extending their half life.

Does anyone know about this?

I think that it's probably a combination of the two, but would love to hear other explanations from others that have a better understanding of physiology, and the pharma-dynamics that are taking place.

harmalas are definitely very psychedelic on they're own and have a unique affect. but some interesting endogenous chemicals could be involved as well, especially in some of these high dose experiences in the dark. Theres actually several chemicals produced by the brain which are structurally very similar to harmalas

I largely agree with the last statement; studies done on animals (which require some caution when directly extrapolating to humans) do suggest that some constituent alkaloids of rue have effects on voltage gated channels across cell membranes and also antagonism at the glutamate receptors.These effects are independant of RIMA activity suggesting inherent activity of the harmala alkaloids over and above any MAOI effects.

More experiments need to be done with rue compounds, to see what the total effects of the plants are. If anyone knows where to read some papers please post a link.

the harmalas act in a way very similar to ibogaine. They are active on their own apart from any RIMA activity..though it would seem obvious that some endogenous neurotransmitters are also boosted from the RIMA effects.
