Hey guys.. I'm a little confused about the whole idea of a multiverse. It seems to contradict the definition of universe to begin with...

Here's a wikipedia definition of the two:

"The universe is commonly defined as the totality of everything that exists"

"The multiverse (or meta-universe, metaverse) is the hypothetical set of multiple possible universes (including the historical universe we consistently experience) that together comprise everything that exists and can exist: the entirety of space, time, matter, and energy as well as the physical laws and constants that describe them."

I don't understand how there can be more than one universe if the universe is everything in existance :/ ..

It's just semantics. Multiversers simply disagree that the universe is the "totality of everything that exists". Probably best not to read too closely into the wording of definitions on Wikipedia. As a source of hard factual data Wikipedia is unreliable at the best of times, for tricky topics like these it's hopeless.

Yes. So basically a universe contains bodies of planets and stars that make up galaxies.

And the theory is that there are a ton of these. My question is...

If planets and a star make up a solar system

And many solar systems make up a galaxy

And many galaxies make up a universe

And many universes comprise a multi-verse

Then what do a bunch of multi-verses make up?

Mega-verse. But, personally I think we are just one stepping-stone on a giant, unending spiral upwards. One of our cells could be a planet to one thing, and out planet could be a cell to another. It just gets exponentially bigger

I'm no scientist (only a mere psychonaut), but I remember reading about this...that the concept is that there could be different "spaces" where different laws of physics and math would theoretically apply.

I like topics like these, but it really is too much to fathom or think about sometimes. It's fun to watch the universe on shrooms or acid and kinda take down some of those mental barriers that don't let us *truly* grasp such concepts.

This is one Multi-verse theory, also find interesting the theory where for every possibilitie the universe splits into a new one, for example everytime you turn right the universe splits and a version of you turns left.

All this stuff is mindblowing to try conceive.
Black then white are all I see in my infancy.
Red and yellow then came to be,
reaching out to me, lets me see.
There is so much more and it beckons me to look though to these,
infinite possibilities.
As below so above and beyond I imagine,
drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

I saw a thing that showed two pictures. One was a brain cell and the other was a virtual recreation of what the universe looks like and they were identical

Edit: here it is

..as i understand the Multiverse theory..
a Universe is defined as a Singularity which the inflates (expands) to create it's own space and time..
beyond the visible edge of our universe it's 'reality' continues to expand at great speed into the quantum psychics definition of Nothing, which is a non-determinate 'sea' of virtual particles..the 'Quantum Potential'..
it is conceivable, then, that other Singularities arise as anomalies ('fluctuations'Pleased within the potential, and expand into the 'vacuum' independently of our own..they could have different laws of physics and time-scales..

..whether two could ever 'meet' is on the far edge of science speculation..

Yeah there are many different theories to multiple universes.

I believe our Universe to be inside something truly infinite, like a womb.

I believe our universe to be the only universe like ours exactly, in SOLID state.

I believe there are other universes made up of different forces, energies.

I believe the ENTITY we reside inside to be truly infinite, able to create other realities other lives which are infinite in their own sense, but only this source is truly infinite on its own, we are infinitely connected.

I believe this MOTHER entity being energy to be INFINITE in all meaning and pure consciousness and that all forms of life are derived from small pieces of its infinity, different parts of energy and different parts of its conscious.

I believe there to be a number of different realities.

As i believe infinity must be directed,

That to have infinite realities would simply be chaotic and destructive.

But who knows, we all know our own thoughts. Razz

Could you imagine being able to talk to yourself? The kind of conversation you could have with yourself would, I think, be the kind you wouldn't be able to have with anyone else.

First of all anybody notice the simitlarity between the brain and universe pics to the mycelium networks of mushrooms?

Not a scientist in anyway shape or form, but I have come to realize we are living in a paradox. It is infinite, but finite spaces have to exist for infinity, and infinity has to exist for finite spaces. Just like a universe has to exist for a multiverse to exist. Just like the infinite, boundless ether, or the other side has to exist for this limited physical existence to exist and vice versa. These things seem to contradict eachother at first but looking closer I have realized that in a crazy twisted way they actaully support eachother and make eachother possible. The yin and the yang. It really is a huge cosmic joke, a paradox, and it doesnt make any damn sense but its beautiful!

yes indeed.

Ultra complex organism like a universe or brain cells, compared to a simple hydrogen molecule. Life/death. Black/white.
I believe that the Yin and Yang principle is one of the most helpful tool to understand the reality.

Conscience is infinite, the possibility however in the physical world are finite by the laws of the universe. If we follow the yin and yang, their is finite and infinite. Infinite is probably that one energy/pure soncscience, finite is the physical world and the possibilities created under the laws. Imagination is infinite, stregth is finite..

Life is infinite in the grand scheme of thing, our life is not. Every moment is infinite and already over! Perfect paradox. You need a complete paradox to make a complete logical and ordered world. you need chaos and order, we need the balance of two extreme, negative and positive, to creat energy.

we are the One alive, I wonder how it is to be the One dead...

cheers

I've noticed it mentioned many times before how you can find certain structures in all parts of life. I don't want to butcher the information, my memory is faded on actually what, but nature has a certain design and it applies it thru out existence.

^ I agree and there are many different names for it, the one that comes to mind for me is the Tao. I really dig that book, sometimes I have to read 3-4 different translations of the message but its pretty awesome. It says something to the effect that a man can learn everything there is to know about the universe without ever leaving his front porch. And this makes sense to me, everything is made out of the same stuff, everything is one we just create this illusion of seperation so it makes more sense to our egos (i think, anyway). So everything should work pretty much the same way, its all micro-cosms, the endless fractal existence. Just like the myclelium netowrk could be looked at as a micro-cosm to the brain synapses (or a macro cosm might be more accurate), the brain a microcosm to the dark matter and energy in the universe etc. With this fractal structure to the universe, you could learn everything there is to know by simply ovserving a tree, or a river. Yea it would take a hell of a long time probably to see these things in all their different states and really become familiar with the cycle of things, but we are blessed enough to be able to observe many different trees and rivers and people and such all in different stages of their existence.

*eidt, now that im done rambling for now I should say i really dont know anything about the multiverse theory, ill look into it someday im sure I havnt yet. So I am making assumptions here based on how i beleive everything else works.

Weeeellll, I am sorry to pop your balloon of sweet ideas, but it's just that we don't learn shit about the universe by just looking at a tree. Thousands of years of civilization and scientific discourse has taught us as much.

Thumbs up

lol, only as much as a tree could, if your looking at in the right way that is. Your not saying the Tao, an ancient text respected my millions as an extremely insightful and divine peice of literature, is total bs are you? Have you read the tao? You should if you have not it might help broaden you horizons a bit.
