While spending a great deal of time reading about the shamanic use of psychedelics, I came across various anecdotes where the spirit of the plant teaches a sacred chant to the person who took the substance. Like Castaneda explains in The Teaching of Don Juan, this song is totally new to the person who receives it and, soon after the experience, it becomes one of the main tools in his shamanic practice. So, I was wondering if such an extraordinary thing ever happened to anyone on the Nexus? I also would like to know if this ever happened to a person with poor music skills? Cheers Smile

Cool subject, I have not had anything like that "given" or "taught" to me. I'd like to hear about other people's experience with this as well.

Reminds me of the ocarina of time in zelda, as you learn songs throughout the game, they become one of your sources of magick.

But when i was growing plants for a living and had plant visions daily, a few tunes came to my mind. I can whistle or hum one, there are not words really but implied meanings.

I never really used it during a trip as I don't think that is what it was for, it was a growing song the plants liked to hear, I have one for mushrooms too, but it's really deep sounding and not very melodic.
At this time I was doing many high dose fungi and aya type journeys. Many of the visions I received were images and examples on how to treat particular plants and fungi and how to cultivate them to perfection.
I specifically remember a blue vision, living the life cycle of a mushroom about 50 times in one long session.... Every time the life cycle was ever slightly different and I could witness how this effected the end result. Each vision had an alteration of the mushroom song as well, that apparently is part of the growing enviroment.

anyway, that is my story and I'm sticking to it. I guess it isn't as exciting as a song that makes visions or heals the sick, but it is the only experience I have with the subject so I thought I'd share.

^ I experienced the life cycle of mushrooms once as well, after consuming them. In my visions I experienced becomming mycelium spreading througout the forest floor and then fruiting.

I end up making a lot of tonal sounds when I take tryptamines, they just come out of me.
Long live the unwoke.

this never happened to me but im preparing and hoping for it. Ive done much research on this topic, and how it works is one must build a relationship with the plant and it will then teach its song or icaros. Once you learn the song its like a telephone calling the spirit and it will be summoned. The bad news is that building this relationship can be hard and require disapline. In shamanic practices, one receives their icaros through dieting a plant. Diet is said to be necessary for respect to the plant spirits, so one is more pure, and so the plant can integrate with u and ur consciousness. This can can be with many shamanic plants psychoactive as well as non psychoactive, it is said all plants have both good and bad spirits. Once dieting a plant, the good spirits will take residence in your body and provide healing, and the bad spirits are around the body and provide protection. This diet usually takes 1-2 weeks, during which you consume the plant every day, and need to refrain from such things like salt, sugar, alcohol, pork, sex...as well as some time after the diet so the plant can integrate within you..so even though this can be difficult especially in western setting, i believe can be very worth it

heres another very good forum with much detailed info on this:

Yeah, in south american mythology that is indeed what they think about it.

Ok. I play music. I have known how to play guitar, harmonica and sing for years. Guitar and sing more. Just learning drums as I got a new kit a short time ago and keyboards (midi controller) have been somewhere there to create music and visuals on my computer.

Back in time:::::
Ok. So I used to have thoughts all through my head for years. I called it. "me and myself". When I was alone I would smoke weed and do things. Like say art, music, skateboarding or maybe cleaning. I would say to myself. "ok, lets do this now" (whatever I was doing at the time) I thought to myself years later (15 years maybe) that there are two of us, me and myself. Me being my mind and myself being my body. This made sense to me in some way. Because if I think of something, then want to do it, I have to tell (control) my body to do the thing I want it to do. Smile

Ok. So I smoke pot only like 1-2 time a year now (very sad yes). I do think in my head a bit from time to time (maybe more than I should). But it has been replaced with other things like music. Music fills my thoughts maybe 90% of the time when I am not thinking about anything else.... Actually, that is not true. When ever I hear a sound, it could be a hum of a machine, the shower, anything that has a tone to it, it triggers me to think up a song. This song is not like any song I have heard before, it is a new song to me. Could be blues, rock, reggae, trance, jazz or anything I think up at the time. I can control all of the sounds, drums, bass, horns, guitar or effects like echo / repeat. Just like a real song orchistrated live by me. I will be at work drumming away. I find it impossible not to!

Ok this has nothing to do with DMT. Sorry. But I thought I would share. Most of the time it happens, it happens most of the time Smile I have recorded a few hummings in the portable voice recorder to learn at a later time on guitar or keyboards, as I think it is important somehow. I am hoping DMT can channel more music when I reach hyperspace, and I am sure it will. because music is my mind and my mind is myself and myself is me. Smile

Ps. Didgeridoo is TOP on my list of new instruments to learn! Weeewooooo wooooo wooooo (pure awesomeness!)

After my second white light encounter with the godhead, I had just gotten through the final white light phase of the closed-eye experience, and opened my eyes. Now, I'm familiar with all sorts of involuntary movements from DMT, but this was rather unique. It was like some internal, instinctive, automated programming was causing me to roar like a lion, head involuntarily rolling and all. I'll tell you this, it sounded far from human. It seems that during most of my godhead encounters, an incredible amount of a special mucous coats my vocal chords (not uncomfortable) which can make them sound incredibly deep and grovely. After some very euphoric roaring (felt very regal and majestic), I began to hum a tune. I don't know where it was coming from, and I'm not a great singer in the slightest, but it was beautiful. The vibrations of humming (especially as modulated via the mucous and having one of those peak experiences of life) resonate very strongly with various parts of my body like perhaps I'm doing some self healing. Anyway, that's my DMT singing story. I do like to hum on aya/pharma too, but this experience as listed above was quite automated/instinctual.

That is awesome EKA!!!
I do something somewhat similiar with music in my head, I don't *need* headphones most of the time.
I'm not musical by nature however so I am often taking an existing noise and working it over. I live most of the time in a highly industrial environment and totally get that weird vibrations and frequencies of such things. It is often funny, at work someone will be like "dude you're kinda dancing to an air reciprocating pump" and I'll just be like "yes... but it's awesome"

funny you mention the Didgeridoo.... I felt some strange urge last night/this morning to hear some (listening to Steve Roach at the moment).

and yes, electric kool-aid and I both lack the gene to stay on topic in a thread.

Thank you guys for the interesting inputs!

From what I gathered from this thread and some others, quite a few people heard or learned humming sounds/simple melodies under the effect of different psychedelics. Now I would love to know if anyone ever learned an actual song with lyrics, that would be magical Smile

P.S. The Shipibo's textiles and icaros are a good example of how this music interaction might happen.
