Hey all. First post here. I think this is the right forum on the web for me to learn some really good tricks. I'm currently researching a way for me to make my own thin layer chromatography apparatus/kit. I'm very interested in preparative tlc. Some elements are coming together for this to be a really viable possibility and I'm interested in your thoughts. I was thinking of using a couple of levels - 4 total for casting/filming my plates.

Wish i knew how to insert an image from a government website so I could show you what I'm aiming for but I think linking it would be most unwise. If you google "spreader for the preparation of uniform plates.." you'll see what I'm talking about.

Two long levels would lie lengthwise and two at each end perpendicular to keep both sides on the level. These particular levels, conveniently, have a groove on one of the straight edges ideal for sliding the trough/doctor blade along. The lips of the straight edges could hold the glass plates. I'm lacking the current particulars on how to build the trough/doctor blade and any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Spacers could set the proper gaps (looking for 2mm) for the doctor blade/film interface.

The trough/doctor blade could probably be assembled from sheet metal like brass.

Im sorry I have no xperience with DIY TLC, only with commercial plates, but there is a thread exactly about this in the substance testing subforum, link in my signature.. Maybe it helps you?

Good luck and let us know how the project turns out!

Btw, do write an intro essay so we can properly welcome you to the community Smile

I know this thread is a bit dated, and the OP is likely no longer here. But, I do have experience with making my own TLC plates.

If you did a double blind test with a commercial TLC plate and a well made plate from home, you could not tell the difference.

Its cost effective to make your own plates Once you have the materials, its cheaper to make your own TLC plates then buy them in the long run. But you must have extraordinary patience.

You need two basic chemicals, anhydrous calcium sulfate, and silica gel. and for the plate, I use glass microscope slides.

You can actually grind your own silica from those (do not eat) silica gel packets. But this is an impossible task, unless you have a good ball mill with ceramic coated lead marbles. (For serious fine grinding)
Its a better idea to buy silica powder specifically for TLC.

From there on its just delicate work. Wear gloves, Clean the glass plate from any oils from you hands using MeOH/NaOH solution and add the liquid suspension of silica with a pipette or syringe. Then air dry and bake in the oven to drive off any moisture.

They have to be handled more delicately then commerical plates. But analysis results are the same.

heres a great .pdf

Glad to be of use!!
It would be really great to get as many people using TLC as possible, its a lot easier then you might think.

I'll be making more plates myself sometime this month,

I didn't notice when I made the post, but theres already a thread about this
