Well, if you wanted to employ tobacco in the safest way possible while still protecting yourself from dark entities, then burn it as incense. It doesn't take a lot, a small pinch of mapacho on some activated charcoal will smell pretty strong.
Many people roll mapacho up and take small tokes off it during ayahuasca ceremonies. It can help to guide the experience and often intensify it. Just don't smoke too much to quickly, because with mapacho, nicotine poisoning can become reality all to quickly.
Or you can go with the most traditional route in the book, which is also the safest for your body, and make snuff with it. The kind for your nose...lol. Not to hard to make, and adds a lot to the experience. But i will warn you, the snuff seems to have more addictive qualities than other methods.
Personally, I normally smoke organic tobacco on right before a huasca ceremony, and during if I can manage. I also throw a pinch of it into the brew itself. If smoking it before your ceremony, think about your intentions as you inhale, and when you exhale, let the smoke carry your thoughts to the gods.
Let the plants guide you, for they teach lessons beyond what we humans can offer.
Distorted is our perception of reality, because reality is much more distorted than we could ever perceive it to be.
