Use a thimble. You can improvise one with a paper filter.

Tried a soxhlet extraction with ethanol, but with no success. There was just no drainage of liquid through the cactus powder (pre-wetted) and it got clogged.

How do you guys ensure good drainage & functioning soxhlet with cactus powder?

I know the method seems neat, but it's really a waste of time. my approach with a pressure cooker is far more effective, and requires an hour tops. the soxhlet is better suited for making tinctures; i.e. kratom and salvia extracts.

I had used cottonwool in the bottom & top, sandwitching the cactus powder, will replacing this with filter paper make that much difference as it seemed to be the case that the ethanol just was staying in the thick sludgey cactus.
