Hey I wanted to ask, where does one find a thick steel/copper wool? I don't live in the US but I swear I've been to every kind of different store that should have it, but none of them do. I've tried 3 other types of meshes too but they weren't good, probably because of the material. And the thin wool indeed makes you feel really bad when you accidentally inhale it. So does anyone have any outside-the-box ideas about some places where I could find it? Or another alternative? Thanks.

I just made a machine for a bit of fun (I have a GVG, so no real need for one)... I notice that people get a lot of cracking along the bottom of the bottle after drilling the hole - which I think I have found a way round. I hope this helps some one

You will need:

Jet lighter

Masonry drill bit (or glass one, but I suspect masonry bits are cheaper)

a file with fine teeth

All you need to do is heat the area you want to drill for a minute or so, until it gets hot - make sure you have the bottle clamped between something that won't burn, I held it between my shoes.

Then just drill using a reasonably firm pressure and you will notice the hot glass yields much easier than the cool stuff. It should take a few minutes before the glass gives way and a little plug (the area you heated) pops out.

Then file the edges using a small file, give it a rinse and you're good to go!

Just one thing to add. Just be careful it doesnt shatter because it is a cold bottle and the shock of heat might shatter it. So maybe do a swirling motion first to warm the area and then center it to be a hotspot. Nice idea though! I like the plug popping thing you mentioned. clean and easy! Gosh my last machine (current one) took a good 20 minutes of drilling it through the solid glass bottom! My hand was in pain for a couple of days, felt cramped! hehe
Well look at the bright side, now you have a disposable machine pipe to take with you somewhere. Or even something to take when you dont want to risk breaking the gvg. Or even better, a present for someone!

Whitebread - I am sure you are joking there.. lol might break the microwave it you did attempt this. But cool experiment on youtube.

EKA - Yes you are right mate, I forgot to mention to heat the glass slowly - and cool it down slowly!

And I'm sure it will be used for all 3 purposes

Neck from single stem vase and a small salt bottle.
Drilled hole and hot glued the stem.
Total cost $1.80
