Hmmm, sounds a little fishy to me.
I'd like to hear what the nexus has to say about this.
Stolen smart phones

Carriers all around the world are currently disabling the SIM card if a phone is reported stolen. However, as stated by that article, nothing stops the thieves to replace the SIM card with a functioning one, and resell the apparatus. Disabling the phone altogether could eventually put an end to at least a sector of the black market. It's not much, but it's something.

Not a bad idea, IMO. Why do you think it's fishy? Maybe you see something that I don't, please share.
The truth...lies within.

"...the major cell phone carriers in the United States and the Federal Communications Commission have agreed to their call to set up an integrated database of unique cell phone identifiers, known as International Mobile Equipment Identity numbers, to allow cell phone companies to permanently disable..."

The companies could have easily implemented this on their own, like they currently do when deactivating SIM cards on stolen phones. Instead, what we will have is an integrated database of IMEI numbers maintained by the government. Your name will be linked to a particular phone, and the government will have direct access to records of all your activity, no matter which SIM card is in your phone, no matter where in the world you are.

This is about surveillance, hidden under the guise of preventing phone theft.
