I find that it's easy to get really nice sounds in Logic, because the built-in effects and tools are superb. But this comes at the cost of slightly less flexibility. Also, I don't suggest using Logic's factory sample library, it sucks IMHO. I've got Kontakt, which actually has a GREAT factory sample lib.

You mean just recording all sorts of cool and crazy sounds, and resampling the crap out of them?

I use Ableton 8 with a ton of VSTs, and Reason 5. Havent figure out Max yet..
Some good VSTs are the Korg Legacy pack, and Voxengo's curve EQ- capable of 60 band EQ, allowing one to warp white noise or sound in general to align to spectral densities of colored noise such as blue noise, green, violet - etc... Voxengo has some absolutely spiffing wares.
I'm not sure what hardware I will get. I want small and versatile. I want a velocity sensitive drum pad with 6-12 pads, and a keyboard that will play scales - preferably lighting up the notes in the scale and deactivating the others. I've never seen anything like that, haven't looked. i don't even have that great of a computer right now.

Also - the best effects modules I have ever used have to be GRM tools. I could spend days just playing with them! I've always been more steered towards Pro Tools. I used Cubase back in the day. Though I haven't made any music in quite a while. I'm gonna focus on painting over the next couple of years. Don't worry music, I'll be back. Peace Macre All things stated within this website by myself are expressly intended for entertainment purposes only.

TheAppleCore wrote:Also, if you have the time to spend learning it, Reaktor is unbelievably powerful. I created an awesome synth in Reaktor where I whisper into a microphone and modulate the sound with the microphone's output, so I basically have a totally effortless way to expressively control the synth while playing it live. I was tripping out on that thing when I first got it working. So much fun. Damn that sounds amazing. I'd love to hear more about how you did this. My favourite tools are Reason and Max/MSP, and I frequently use them together. If I was really focussed on making music rather than just creating fat soundscapes then I would probably add some software with a good sequencer to that list. Reason's is pretty bad, and sequencing with Max is like building a car when your real goal is just to drive to the shops.
